Today is the 107th anniversary of the birth of the South African clergyman, theologian, and anti-apartheid activist Revd Dr Beyers Naudé. This evening I watched @heck_honey Henque Heymans’ wonderful play, ‘Oom Bey, my pa’, at the @ArtscapeTheatre It is a moving dramatization of the life of Dr Beyers Naudé, the cleric and anti-apartheid activist, told from the perspective of his daughter, Liesel Naudé). It was a very special commemoration of the 104th birthday of Beyers Naudé, parent, theologian, anti-apartheid activist. The speaker on the day was Liesel Naudé, the daughter of oom Bey. It was a very special reminder that among the many things that oom Bey was, he was a parent, and a husband, a human person. We are grateful to Wilgenhof Men’s Residence for hosting the event. Today Prof John de Gruchy delivered the address to commemorate the life and work of Revd dr Beyers Naudé at Wilgenhof Mens Residence at Stellenbosch University. Oom Bey was a resident here when he studied theology at Stellenbosch University in the 1930’s. Prof de Gruchy knew oom Bey well and worked with him in the anti apartheid struggle, the Christian Institute and South African Council of Churches. We are very grateful for the work and witness for justice and transformation.
