More details when I have all the fancy photos but Tyche was Best Puppy In Specialty Show on Saturday over 20 other pups. Her brother, Prophet, was Best Opposite Puppy and RESERVE WINNERS DOG!!!!!!!!! Behold him:
Dueling twin babies, Prophet with his BOPISS and RWD ribbons; Tyche with BPISS. Prophet is wee at just under 21” and I hope he stays small! He’s adorable. 🥰
I have a question about the competitions you take Tyche to. It seems she does really well in them. What are the competitions judging specifically and what is it about Tyche that helps her stand out?
I assume you are talking about conformation/shows, since that is the only thing Tyche has properly competed in so far.
It's a tough question to answer in any really satisfactory way, but the short answer is that judges are supposed to be looking for the dogs that best match the breed standard. You can read the silken windhound standard here: https://silkenwindhounds.org/breed-standard/
There are a few details in our standard that are quite contentious, and I believe we are in the process of making adjustments to the standard, as well as developing an illustrated standard to add more clarity.
Judging to the standard is quite subjective, and different judges value different things--sometimes things I would consider trivial. For example, I've had dogs dumped just because of ear set, or just because they were being a little squirrelly. Then I've had dogs win just for having a good attitude in the ring. This isn't speculation; I specifically used examples where the judge explicitly told me their reasoning.
I did not ask the judge who awarded Tyche and Prophet why he chose us, but I regret that now. I could speculate about why I think they won, but it would be just that: speculation. He did mention that he dumped us for Brood Bitch because Prophet was being a pill, which I thought was funny because he'd already awarded Proph Best Opposite Puppy and Reserve Winners Dog. But hey, I'll take BOPISS and RWD over Brood Bitch any day.
There is an extensive conversation happening right now on Facebook in the group called Facebook Silken Windhound Society, and there are often confo conversations also happening in the Silken Windhound Discord if you're interested in learning more. There are also many groups on social media (especially Facebook) dedicated to learning about dog conformation and showing in general.
Here's Prophet and Tyche's win photo just for fun. Yes, Tyche is bigger than her brother lol
I was very proud to produce the puppies that won these ribbons because I told everyone on the planet that we didn't stand a snowball's chance given how many GORGEOUS puppies were going to be there. I am still in awe of it. And I still stand by my statement that there were many, many deserving pups. There are a ton of really nice pups right now, not just in my region, but all over the country. I'm proud to have mine counted among them.
