Ignore the fact that I'm posting this so long after TPOT 19 I just needed like a month of processing before I could draw it cause holy shit that episode
I haven't seen anyone talk about this yet but I just wanted to talk about the sky in TPOT 20? Alt version and bonus analysis ramble under the cut!
For the first part of TPOT 20, the night sky is generally very clear. You can see the stars and, most prominently, the moon.
In regards to the picture below with Four, I feel like the two stars are supposed to mean something here? Other than being obvious blue and red for One and Three respectively, I feel like there's more to this, but for now I'm just thinking they represent One and Three just hanging out lol
In TPOT (or in general?) the night sky background has these stars that are bigger that the rest. I thought they were for interesting aesthetic purposes but maybe they're supposed to represent something? A wild guess could just be something like the fridge theory (just that the 4 things on the fridge are representative of One, Two, Three, and Four) since there's four stars and one is duller, I dunno! No solid guesses here for me just yet
Now this is what I wanted to talk about: after One and Three's fight, it starts to rain and there's thunder and the sky is covered. After Three shatters and gets revived and One runs away, the rain begins to let up a little, at least enough so we can get a scope of the moon. Here's where I think it gets interesting symbolism wise.
When Three is revived, she's brought back wrong. Her eye? That thing is gone dude </3 Three just has one eye. You know what's kinda cool? The clouds giving way to the moon is kinda shaped like an eye. And having that "eye" in the sky be over cast looking over the scene just feels so ominous or even creepy. It's like Three's eye got turned into the moon /j
It's watching over everyone now, it's watching this whole scene play out, being in the background constantly as One is struggling to try to fix things.
Now? Now she's being sent there. Looking up, the eye kinda looks back, not to mention this really cool shot of Three we get with this sky as well:
I just thought it was interesting that it was shaped like that, the sky being a reflection or even a hint that helps foreshadow the events in a real subtle way. I double checked to see if we ever get this kind of sky prior to Three shattering, and just as I thought, it's nothing but clear skies until it all goes awry.
Thanks for reading if you got this far! I loved this episode and analyzing it, it was a lot of fun! I just hope my words were coherent ToT
