Do you think it's ok to self diagnose BFRBs? I know for other mental illnesses it's not good because like you may think you have depression but have something else. But for BFRBs.. they can't be anything else. Like, I pull out my hair. Nothing much else it could be other than trichotillomania. What's your opinion? 😊
personally, bfrbs are something i’ve never heard my doctor talk about… i think you have a point with the “they can’t be anything else,” though.
if you want my thoughts, i’d say do a bit more research and analyze yourself before drawing any conclusions.
Aaaa thank you so much for making that post about BFRB awareness week. I've been picking my nails and the skin on my fingers since I was 8/9 (I'm 20 now) and I never knew there was an actual name for it. I'm so glad to know that what I do and feel isn't that weird and that I can't 'just stop' as my mom tells me too often. I might just bring it up to my therapist next time. c:
wowow! you’re welcome! it makes me really happy to know that people are figuring out that they don’t have to feel alone with a bfrb and that they don’t just have weird habits. sending you good vibes. i hope your therapist and mom can understand you a little better knowing about bfrbs.
K honestly I've struggled with skin picking since I was like 11 but I had no idea what bfrb was and your drawing last year was my first knowledge it was a disorder and like since it's awareness week again, Tysm for this art? -random kid u helped💚💙
wowowow im so glad you were able to learn something new about yourself because of my post! thank you for going out of the way to send such a sweet and friendly message! (happy bfrb awareness week :D)
Hi! Thank you for making the BFRB post, i had honestly no idea other people do things like that, always thought its just me, and also I'm considering buying a fiddle toy, which i would have never thought of if not your post! So helpful!
aw.. this is the best part of bfrb awareness week- helping other people learn that they don’t have to feel alone with their behaviors. my heart is warmed. thank you for your kind message!
I scratch compulsively. Like ill get an itch and next thing I know I'm an mess, scratching and scratching. I offten do it to the point where I'm bleeding and scabbed. Is this dermatillomania?
hi! this sounds similar to a bfrb in that it’s a compulsive action that causes damage to your body.
i can’t really diagnose people, as i’m not a doctor, but this does sound like dermatillomania under trich.org’s definition of dermatillomania: “repetitively touch, rub, scratch, pick at, or dig into their skin, often in an attempt to remove small irregularities or perceived imperfections. This behavior may result in skin discoloration or scarring”
(but you may want to do a little more research to see if you fit the signs/symptoms of dermatillomania since I don’t know your full story… i’m not an expert on bfrbs, just somebody who struggles with one!)
i hope this helped. thank you for sending a message!
AH, this is the first time ive heard of BFRB, but ive been picking so long so awfully that its ruined my face/upper back permanently. i once went to jail for a nice over traffic tickets, and they really grinded their knee into me when i said i didnt do drugs, because they were convinced by my face that i did meth lol... just sharing. ty for letting me kno this is a little more normal than i thought!
oh my god… that’s awful. i’m so sorry that happened to you.
if only bfrbs were a thing that more people understood… (awareness week this year is going to be lit!!)
thank you for sharing your story and sending a message. i’m glad you don’t have to feel alone with your bfrb. here’s me sending you good vibes!
where did u get your fiddle toy?
i got mine at a store called earthbound trading co as a present from a friend!
if you can’t find an earthbound near you, i always recommend stimtastic.co ! they’ve got a lot of fiddle toys that would suit all kinds of different bfrbs, and at pretty affordable prices.
