Misunderstood? cop·y·right noun 1: the exclusive legal right, given to an originator or an assignee to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material, and to authorize others to do the same. The word is best broken down as.. the right to copy your work.
If you watch and support 'Heroes of Cosplay' as well as Syfy in it's working, you should most certainly read this. What is amazing is that this is not new. Even before the airing of the actual show, the Syfy page and the 'Heroes of Cosplay' page itself had been posting photographs of the cosplayers with cropped or edited watermarks and also without permission. Even then the battle for permission from the photographer was a huge issue. Now that it is being brought up front that the photographers are getting 0 credit or payment for use of their work in the actual episodes themselves which Syfy gets commercial revenue off of, there is no standing by anymore. Please share this around and show Syfy that they cannot bring their childish tv reality sense into our world and hope to get away with it. Do not attack your cosplayers. Do not attack the community. We are part of the internet legion. We do not forget. And we do not forgive. Added clarification: There were issues I saw here where people were arguing over who owns the right to a photo. Cosplayers are unique in this because we don't work with legal rights until it becomes a problem so here is the simple form (that is still very grey area and far more complicated than the below from my understanding with my legal cosplayer buddies):
A photographer owns the RIGHTS to the photo
A model owns the RIGHTS to SELL their face in the photo
Selling a photo or using it for profit requires both the permission of the photographer AND model (unless it is deemed 'newsworthy')
