Happy Juneteenth, 154 years ago today the final slaves were freed. So we celebrate Black Independence Day. Only a few generations removed from that atrocity that lasted approximately 465 years. Coupled with the continued injustices and murders we face as a people, I don’t think we should even have to ask for reparations. They should simply be given. #bh365 #juneteenth #blackindependenceday #melaninqueen #qing #queerartist #androgynous #queer #loveislove #wlw https://www.instagram.com/p/By50kwFhzTX/?igshid=svq0u30k8hey
The Hon. Julius Alexander Isaac was the first Black person to be named Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Canada in 1991. Isaac first came to Canada from Grenada to study at the university of Canada. He has served as the assistant deputy Attorney General of Canada and achieved the “Queen’s Counsel” designation in 1975.
Canada’s oldest Black pioneer settlement was formed in Saskatchewan after Blacks experiencing racism in the United States took up the Canadian government’s offer of free land to anyone willing to face the elements and break land in the prairies.
The Amherstburg Freedom Museum, located in Windsor, Ontario, “tells the story of African Canadians’ journey and contributions by preserving stories and preventing artifacts that educate and inspire.”
I can't help but think of the black women photographers like @carriemaeweems @debwillisphoto @lornasimpson and others who were inspired long before we would know their names. #Pioneers in the arts and photography in a world dominated by men who did not look like them. It takes 10-20 years sometimes to become an overnight success. Thank you ladies for all you have done and continue to do! #blackhistory #history.
