Tributes to the doyen of Hindustani Classical music, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, on his 99th birth anniversary today. A doyen of the Kirana Gharana, he was renowned for the ‘khayal’ form of singing, as well as for his bhajans and abhangs.
Here is a rare photo of Music Director Shankar, Lyricist Shailendra, Bhimsen Joshi, Manna Dey, Music Director Jaikishan and Music Assistant Dattaram at the rehearsal of the song “Ketaki Gulaab Juhi Champakaban Phoole” from ‘Basant Bahar’ (1956).
तीर्थ विठ्ठल
When a Soldier Salutes a Legend.
Today isn’t just a date.
It’s the day we remember a voice that felt like the monsoon itself – deep, powerful, drenching the soul. Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
And in that remembering, my mind drifts to an incredible connection – Colonel Rajyavardhan Rathore.
Think about it. The strict, ordered silence of military life. The wild, emotional expanse of a Bhairavi raga. What’s the link?
For Colonel Rathore, Panditji’s music wasn’t just background score. It was companionship. It was tapasya (austerity) he could understand as a soldier. The discipline in those long, held notes. The courage in those powerful crescendos. The devotion in every phrase.
It’s beautiful, isn’t it? How a legend’s art doesn’t stay confined to stages. It seeps into barracks. It fuels a different kind of warrior. It becomes the silent prayer before a mission, the thread connecting a protector to the very soul of what he protects.
So today, I’m listening to “Jo Bhaje Hari Ko Sada…” on loop. Paying tribute to The Maestro. And quietly saluting the Colonel, who shows us that legacy is carried forward in the most unexpected, powerful ways.

A boy who ran away from home
A boy who ran away from home
The family sat down for lunch. All were being served. An eleven-year-old boy wanted ghee (clarified butter), but was refused. He created a scene and walked out of the house.Everyone thought he would return once the hunger pangs started gnawing at his innards. The boy had other ideas. He headed to the nearest railway station and boarded a train to Gwalior with not a penny in his pocket. When the…
