Bhojeshwar Shiva Temple, Bhojpur, Madhya Pradesh

Gaurav Upadhyay wrote : 11th century Hindu temple in Bhojpur on the outskirts of Bhopal. This town of Bhojpur is famous for the Bhojeshwar temple built by Raja Bhoj of the Paramara dynasty in Central India.

The Bhojpur temple has one of the tallest and grandest Shiva Lingams in India. And it’s built out of a single rock. Considering this 1000 year old Shiva temple was actually unfinished, imagine how grand it would have looked had it been completed.

Śrī Bhojeśwara Mahādeva

A spectacular, yet incomplete temple dedicated to Lord Śiva Mahādeva located at Bhojpur in Madhya Pradesh. Commissioned in the 11th Century by the celebrated King Rājā Bhoja of Mālwā of the Paramāra dynasty, hence the name Bhojeśwara – the Lord of Bhoja – the temple houses in its sanctum what is today the second largest Śivaliñga standing 7.5 feet high on a massive yonī-pata.

It is claimed that the temple was left incomplete when the king diverted funds to repair the Śiva temple of Somanātha

at Prabhās in Gujarātha, after it was damaged in a raid by Sultan Muhammad of Gazni. The intricate carvings on the incomplete external panels testify to the planned magnificence of this temple. The adjacent granite quarry still has signs of incomplete statuary and markings made in the rock.
