EDDIE REDMAYNE as The Jackal in Day of the Jackal (2024) directed by Brian Kirk written by Ronan Bennett
the death of me
With Bianca while I do think the writers of the show basically made her a "Deus ex machina" sort of character, I do think that (like the common trend of this show goes) she's a pretty well-written character. I think a lot of people want to give her shit because of her character's role in the story but calling her badly written is a stretch.
She was really a missed opportunity in my eyes because she had a potential. Even though she was the "strong female lead" she didn't necessarily fall into the trap that most other "strong female lead" characters get shoved into that makes them boring and bland.
I could go on and on about the shitty trope hole that these type of women fall into but key points are: she struggles emotionally and has emotional depth, and she's not overly pressured into the "curse you patriarchy, I'd be unstoppable if not for men" thing.
But honestly I think even if her role is kind of weird, hatred for her is undeserved because she plays off the same cliche and overdone trope of "near prophetic specialist" that so many white, male characters have gotten and they don't get nearly as much flack for it (Will "the evidence will explain it" Graham, HOW do you defend his leaps of logic besides the fact of "ehhhh tropey savant syndome" I really want to know)
Oh my god I've just finished the last episode of day of the jackal and I have Thoughts!!!!
I was Not expecting Bianca to die like that???? I feel like they made a lot of mistakes in the jackal's house - I guess maybe they wanted to show how she'd been kinda consumed with hubris but I really liked her character so I was sad she's gone
OC having Bianca's text saying she's been sent to Spain is so saddddd omg
The whole arc with the old couple was so sad ): I know the jackal didn't necessarily want to kill them until she stabbed him but it was still sad to see
I was so happy to see Nuria taking all the money and running!!! She was 100% the person I was rooting for
I'm kinda loving the jackal buddying up with zina, they'll be a fun duo if they do a second season
Am I the only one surprised by the reaction Bianca's character has gotten from audiences? I've come across so many people saying they don't like her because she's "not a good person", that they're glad she's dead.
Throughout television history, especially in spy/detective shows, there have existed a few main characters that fall under the 'protagonist' label but were morally grey, did questionable things and were always willing to stoop low just to nab the bad guy. To them, the end always justified the means. And they were loved by the viewers.
But with Bianca, it's a completely different story. Watch any video about The Day Of The Jackal on any social media platform, and you'd be more likely to find way more comments from people bashing her and rejoicing in her defeat at the end of the final episode, rather than the other way around.
Why is this?
Honestly not mad at all that Bianca is a ruthless bitch but the narrative of the working woman getting blamed by everyone for neglecting her family in the course of doing her job is so tired in the year 2024.
I get that she’s the foil to the Jackal and his and her narratives are parallel but the work life imbalance issue in Jackal’s family is so different. Why is a secret assassin’s wife so much more empathetic than a literal MI6 agent’s husband I’m crying your wife is at least technically trying to be on the good side jfc
