Fat Dog 120 Crew: I’d like to think I’m mentally and physically strong enough to run a 120 miles on my own (and maybe I am?), but as of now I’m ok not exploring that perceived limit. Honestly I just thoroughly love the shared experience (suffering?) of the whole spectacle. Creating a shared memory with my family, friends, crew, and pacers is something I cherish. I love a good story and having the opportunity to collectively retell ours in the future is one we all earned. I don’t have adequate words to completely convey the amount of love I have for each of them, but I’ll try. . Everyone has been so very incredibly generous with their time and energy, sacrificing precious vacation days, flying all the way across the country, staying up all day and night (x2!), renting cars to shuttle everyone around, traveling across international borders, training for months just to walk with me for a few miles, driving to every aid station, talking me up when I doubted myself, reciting corny jokes (how do you tell a cow to move?), singing terrible pop songs, prodding me to eat and drink even when I didn’t want to, telling me trail stories that I’d never heard before even though we’ve been friends for almost 10 years, dealing sleep walkers, photographing my sleep induced telephone booth (it was a tree) and bald eagles (also a tree), making sure I was well taken care of at aid stations, embarrassing me with cow bells, helping pull out my rain jacket and packing it back every 20 minutes, somehow getting me to run the last 4 miles without ever saying anything, helping me stay awake by playing games (I went to the market and bought...) and unconditionally supporting me the entire race. It’s what helped drive me to keep going. They held me accountable both during the race and many months before when I first asked them to help. . I’m incredibly lucky and forever grateful to have them be a part of my trail family. . Fat Dog 120 “Suck it up whiny baby.” . 120 miles, 27,000 feet, and 43:17 hours of pure Canadian fun. Although I’m still trying to process this past weekend there’s a few things that stick in my mind. . I know most everyone says this, but really, I have the BEST family, friends, crew and pacers and am so incredibly grateful for all their support and help! . Fat Dog really is truly one of the most scenic ultra races in Canada. . There was a little bit of everything on this course: long mellow climbs, sub-alpine meadows, short (and long) steep climbs, views for days, woods galore, mid thigh high stream crossings, forest service roads, a bit of pavement, mountains (of course!), views for days, mountain lakes, rain, fog, scree fields, sunrises, sunsets (x2), false summits, and popping wildflowers. 43 hours is a really long time to be awake and moving. . The weather was about as perfect as it could be. I can’t imagine having to run with it 10-20 degrees(f) hotter or colder. . Heather trail was absolutely spectacular with blooming wildflowers and views for days. Nice to be able to 'run' this section twice, both times in the daylight. . Cresting Mt Frosty at sunset was perfect. Thankful I didn’t have to come down the talus field in the rain or at night or both. . Skyline was not fun. I guess it could have been 'fun' if it was light outside and I actually got to see something. But mostly all I saw was the ground and a whole lot of surrounding pitch black. Brutal at miles 110-120. . Mosquitoes were apparently on holiday as I thankfully didn’t have any issues for the entire race! . Many who had run the race the normal route and this alternative route said this year was harder even with the favorable weather. The race cutoff was extended by an extra hour, so I guess that all aligns. . The race was everything I thought it would be. Incredibly hard. Spectacularly scenic. Amazingly kind and helpful volunteers. Incredibly friendly runners all working and helping each other. A real test for me. Great overall experience I recommend to everyone.
