Psalm 34:14 🕊
Genesis 2:2-3 🕊
Romans 12:12 🕊
Matthew 6:33 🕊
The episode was a masterpiece. But I can't help but notice that they had him reciting the NIV version, which was originally published in 1978.
Should have had him say the King James Version if they wanted to use the most popular English version at the time.
I mean, I would have preferred it in French, but you know. We can't get everything we want. And it didn't change the impact of the scene and performance.
Although, this was likely at the beginning of the French Revolution. And the French government literally outlawed the practice of Christianity during the revolution.
So. . . complicated. And also probably an explanation for the response to the recitation.
So yeah. . . Fascinating thought I had.
UPDATE: As @mai-komagata so kindly pointed out, Catholics don't use the King James Version. He's protestant.
Duh!
What I think is likely the more accurate choice is actually even more complicated.
Mind you, I am not a religious scholar. I am not even a religious person really. So take my limited knowledge with a MASSIVE grain of salt!
As I previously alluded, the 1790s was a very tumultuous time for Christians in Europe. There were outright bans on the practice of the religion in many countries due to political upheaval and revolution. France was at the heart of that.
I believe technically at the time, Catholics would have been reading something in Latin. Probably the Latin Vulgate.
And according to Google, the closest thing to an English translation of that would be the Douay-Rheims-Challoner Bible?
So maybe he'd be reciting either of those?
Again, I am admittedly not religious. I just find history fascinating!
If somebody knows the actual correct answer to my crazy rabbit hole, please feel free to let me know in the comments! Or in my asks!

2 Corinthians 3:17 🕊
Are we all born sinners? Are we all sinful from the moment we are conceived? How is it fair for us to be infected by sin from birth?
"All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all." —Isaiah 53:6 (NLT)
