The purpose of the Bible is to point us to the past, so we can remember what God has done for us, as well as the mistakes of our ancestors.
The scriptures are a divine gift from God himself. They are the main way in which God chooses to speak to His people, and make himself known in this world.
They are filled with accounts of God’s miracles, curses, generosity, and moments of wrath. It’s a love letter from God to us. They’re a historical account of the nation of Israel, and of the early church started by Jesus Christ.
It’s through the scriptures that we gain a better sense of God’s character, His will, and how we are meant to live lives that are pleasing to Him.
This is why it’s integral for Christians to have a steady flow of the word into their lives on a daily basis. By doing so, you provide the conduit through which God’s grace and mercy will flow into your life, as well as the conventions of the Holy Spirit, which will help you offer your life as a living sacrifice to the Lord.
It’s by pondering what God has already done for us in the past, (as well as the fact that He chose to make Himself known to a such perverse and darkened world) that we are filled with gratitude for who He is, and we begin to have faith in His eternal promises.
It’s by spending more time in God’s presence that we desire to experience more of Him. Once you taste and see that the Lord is good, you can’t get enough.
The Bible is also filled with stories of those who didn’t obey God, and those who rejected Him.
These stories are cautionary tales of the consequences that occur when one doesn’t obey the Lord. From Samson, to king Saul, to Judas, these tales are God’s warnings to us about what happens whenever we don’t value His presence with us.
When we don’t value the presence of God, He will give us what we want, and withdraw it from us. He will still be with us (He’s everywhere, after all), but His Spirit will depart from us, and we will become withered, as a branch caught off from its limb.
God takes these stories into account because He doesn’t want them to become ours. He shows us what happens to warn us of repeating our ancestors past mistakes. He loves us too much to see it happen all over again.
The Bible is a collection of God’s love letters and warnings to us; not to scare us, but out of His eternal and unending adoration. These two sides of the coin cannot exist without the other. If we only focus on God’s love, we disregard His hatred for sin. If we only focus on His wrath, we risk serving Him only out of fear, instead of love and gratitude.
God’s word reflects God’s character, and to properly understand its author, we must look at and ponder it in its entirety, just as God meant for us to.
Gods desire is to be known by us, and it’s by diving into the scriptures that His light begins to shine upon our lives, and we in turn become shining lights to this dark world.
