I mean, as someone who for the longest time thought femininity was weak and frivolous, I very much understand the desire to turn it into something dangerous and powerful- a force to be reckoned with. But it does disown a lot of aspects I love about femininity, like motherhood. I think the main problem with it is it just ignores that femininity is already a force to be reckoned with. It doesn't need to be made into a weapon to be that sort of lovely, terrifying force.

Hey just wondering if you had seen The Passion of Joan of Arc and would recommend it? I figured having feelings about female religious figures was enough to warrant going to see it, but I was curious if you had any sort of opinion on it?

DO I.

I think it’s one of those movies worth going to see just to have an opinion on it. It isn’t my Joan of Arc—I prefer her fierce and defiant and impossible, more like the Leelee Sobieski version—but there’s a very human claustrophobia to the way it was filmed that I find interesting. And the expressions…There are stories that the director had the actress playing Joan kneel on hard stone floors for hours, and then revert to a blank expression so that her inner pain would be genuine.

Also if it’s the Criterion Collection version, the soundtrack is actually so stunningly gorgeous that it will take your breath away.
