Raise a Glass

As I reflect on what has happened today I am moved greatly by the implications of Trump’s defeat on our identity as a nation.

Because this victory—a victory over fascism, over racism, over corruption and over the denigration of basic human decency—was not a victory achieved by one or two groups. As some of my longer followers probably know, I’m a devout Catholic; I’m certain that many of you and I would have significant ideological differences.

But over the last weeks and months, Americans of many different philosophies, religions, heritages, races and backgrounds of all kinds came together to lay a condemnation at the feet of Donald Trump: that he is not what America is. That he is not who we are. That we are a nation composed of many people, with many important differences, but also one important thing in common: that we believe we are better together than apart—from many, we are one.

And there is nothing more American than that.
