Skyhold is in a sorry state, but that's to be expected when it's been abandoned for so long. Hopefully we'll have enough people and materials and, above all, funds to fix it. While I was exploring the throne room with the advisors, Varric ran up to me and told me that he needed to introduce me to someone. I think I know who she is, although how he managed to sneak her into the castle without our perfect spymaster knowing is a mystery to me. Anyway, as Leliana said - if it's really her, Cassandra is gonna kill Varric. Not figuratively, literally.

the kanji for sung is made up of the kanji for voice 声, a radical that doesnt contribute to the meaning, and ear 耳!!

I’m not debating the reading of the kanji/hanja, I’m questioning the use of that kanji/hanja as a spelling for his name. This is about his real name given to him at birth vs what I’m only suggesting could be a chosen stage name.

First of all, you’re right about 聲. But my question is did his parents choose that for him, or did Daesung choose it later because it suited him better as a member of Big Bang? Let’s look at the Korean hangul for a sec. 성 (“sung, seong”) can mean many things including but not limited to: castle, sound, and sex (lol).

Do y’all remember that article going around about how the members of Big Bang almost debuted under different stage names? It said Daesung nearly debuted as Big Castle, which was a big WTF LOL moment for many fans. And yet, however absurd it may sound, it makes some sense given that it’s a possible reading of his name. It got me wondering if maybe his name’s interpretation as his parents intended is Big Castle, but upon debuting in a boy band Daesung decided to re-brand, favoring Big Voice instead.

To make things even more confusing… I vaguely recall seeing what I believe was a yearbook photo of him as a child once, long ago, and the spelling of his name was only half what we’re used to. The “dae” part was there but the “sung” was written differently. I can’t read hangul but I do recognize Daesung’s name, and I remember being surprised at the sight of unfamiliar characters beside an image of him. So could it be that his true name isn’t even spelled the same at all? I need to find that photo again. Anyway, anecdotal evidence is poor evidence indeed, and this is such a foggy memory to begin with, so maybe I shouldn’t be leaning on it so heavily.

Lastly, Daesung makes a habit of saying “I use [characters x and y]” when explaining his name. This may be purely a matter of semantics, but to me that implies it’s something he does deliberately, something he’s given careful thought… perhaps to convey a certain desired meaning?

The point I’m trying to make is it’s possible that Daesung voluntarily chooses the reading “big/great” coupled with “voice/sound” to represent himself as a singer… a stage name of sorts. However, though it sounds the same, it may not be the exact name that his parents gave him at birth, the one recorded on official documents, the one he went by before joining Big Bang. He’s always been Daesung. But has the definition of “Daesung” always been as we know it?

Like I said in my tags on that earlier post, all of this is conjecture so please don’t take what I’m saying as absolute truth, it’s just a sneaking suspicion I’ve had for some time now and I like to remain open-minded about it. The idea that he was given the name Big (or Great) Voice and then later became a renowned singer with a powerful voice… It makes for a great story, as if he was destined for this. But it’s almost too perfect and I’m a skeptic, and you know what they say: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
