Country Protip #88- Big Gates
Take a country drive in any direction in Texas these days and you’re liable to see a plethora of big and beautiful front gates on the ranches of the area. These gates will let you know that the property owner is, indeed, somebody. And they probably are somebody important- at least in the city.
One of the first things that many new ranch owners like to do is build an imposing front gate, proclaiming their status as bonafide Texas cattlemen. The truth of the matter, though, is that most longtime ranchers have little time for fancy gates. Not only are they an expensive and useless extravagence, but they often seem a bit arrogant. The real rancher isn’t concerned with what you think of his ranch. He’s concerned with how much rain he’s getting or where his bull disappeared to.
Of course, this isn’t a hard and fast rule. There are some solid ranchers who like to boast a bit, and there are lots of city transplants who don’t feel the need to show off. In the end, it takes all types and, heck- lots of these gates look pretty cool!
