OK so I need people on my dash to be talking about this show. It's not just about dancing or competition - in fact there's very little of the "competition" or "drama" that is usually amped up in a reality show of this genre. Instead, Lizzo encourages the Grrrls to be supportive and care for their own bodies as well as one another! There is so much wonderful, uplifting messaging about body acceptance and the very real ongoing struggle to get there and maintain in a shallow, body-shaming society.
I really cannot recommend this show enough. I laughed, I cried, I marveled at the sheer TALENT and skill of these amazing Grrrls! (Also, it's very Queer friendly!)
y’all. this is complicated for me because I *never* watch reality tv stuff and I don’t want to say anything good about amazon ever but I started Watch Out for the Big Grrrls last night and my big girl ass literally started crying at some points.
there are fat women. multiple fat women. on tv. and no talk about weight loss at all, NO SUCKING TUMMIES IN, no padding out breasts or anything. and they are badass amazing dancers. and there is so much encouragement and positive feedback and active listening. I mean there’s some bullshit too and I fast forward through large swathes when a certain dancer is talking but still this is amazing and validating and I STARTED DANCING ALONG LAST NIGHT STUFF I’VE NEVER TRIED AND FELT SO GOOD ABOUT IT. also one lady is trans and I’m pretty sure everyone is a WOC and there’s plenty of queer representation talk so even if I did shudder out of my skin for the surprise prayer time scene... this feels good. and important.
