They do! Or they can. The presence of an aetheric connection (and any subsequent changes) is what separates a common animal from an aberrant. The explanation Gwennebat gives to Maia is simplified though, certainly, in order to keep the focus on the day's lab, as aberrants are to magi as animals are to human, but they don't seem to quite "attune" the same way humans do. More precisely, aberrants are either born from other aberrants--already seeped in the veil's aetheric currents (So, using the shrewpuffs as an example, they would be more like the Maven. An example would be Thackery Rosewood from chapter 0, a centaur.) or they merge with one of these channels over time... maybe Maia's fox acquaintance is in this latter category.

Yes, actually! These two aberrants are a pair of Rimecur Mastiffs--a specially bred offshoot from the outveil Tibetan Mastiff, and serve as familiars (andbelovedfamilypets) to Sacha Gaillot. It's important to note that only aberrants can serve the role of familiars within the veil. A standard animal would make for a poor familiar, but a fine pet.
