Hey there! I think I have a few Watership Down fans that poke their heads around my fanfics now and again.
So, I decided to make a little page for the handful of stories that I have for them. It’s mostly shipping Fiver off with Bigwig, because rare pairs empower me, idk.
These will only contain archiveofourown.org (AO3) links, but they are also available on fanfiction.net (FFN), if you prefer one over the other.
Anyway, here’s the current list!
~~~~~
Lifeline - This one is a story that’s set at some point after the time from Cowslip’s warren, where Bigwig nearly choked. Instead of shrugging off the experience, he gets a little trauma here, and Fiver helps him recover. Coping is healthy when done right, everyone. (It can be read as friendly or romantic for their development.)
United - Somewhat based on the Nuthanger farm raid and its aftermath, this is a slight deviation on how that section unfolds. Fiver and Hazel have a bit more dramatic of an argument, and Hazel still sets off afterwards. It’ll take Fiver facing himself to help find Hazel, and opening up to his friends to find his brother before it’s too late. (The deviation is that Bigwig especially helps out here, contrary to its other depictions.)
Fu Inlé (After Moonrise) - After having been through such grand journeys together, Bigwig and Fiver spend some time alone on Watership Down. They grow closer and comfort one another over their pasts and futures, slowly deciding to bring those perhaps closer together. (A most definitely romantic development for the pairing.)
Worst Case Scenario - A potential aftermath of Fiver and Bigwig getting together as a couple, only to have some friends give Bigwig a rather hard time with dating their Chief Rabbit’s younger brother. (It’s only got 1 chapter so far, but I’m working on the 2nd one currently. Hopefully coming this month or next!)
Visitors - More of an unrelated oddball idea that I came up with, but it basically turns Hazel, Fiver, and Bigwig into anthropomorphic characters in a sci-fi universe. While on a foreign planet, they run into trouble, but happen to get help from a famous local team of pilots known as Star Fox! (This one is from Fiver’s perspective too, which was unique too.)
It’s a small selection, but I think it’s nice to have written some extra stories for the Watership Down archive. And creating some gay romance between Bigwig and Fiver is very delightful for me! They have an underrated dynamic in my opinion, as friends or as partners. Hooray for BigFi! ...I’m still working on a ship name for them, but this works for now...
Anyway, if you’re in the mood for some gay rabbits, feel free to check out the selection I’ve got here. Beyond the ongoing story that I’m updating, I hope to include maybe another story in the future.
Thank you for reading this! If you happen to read any of the selected stories as well, I do hope you enjoy any of those too!
Nightmares are dreadful things, whether you're experienced with them or not. Two rabbits come together after some and help one another recover and process them.
Hey, I wrote a fanfic based on a book! Crazy stuff, huh?
If you don’t know, I happen to enjoy dabbling into Watership Down content, because I like rabbits and the story is dramatic, compelling, and oddly enough has some cute moments between the survival horrors.
However, this fanfic touches on some post-traumatic stress that Bigwig totally should have gotten after nearly getting strangled at Cowslip’s warren. I think that’s a missed opportunity that no version of the story ever delves into.
It’s also about Fiver, and how he relates to Bigwig’s trauma! The exact character relationship that is shortchanged in probably every version of Watership Down is the dynamic between Fiver and Bigwig after Cowslip’s, because they basically co-exist, and I feel they should have gotten closer after that.
Of the Watership Down content that I write, this is also the story that follows the canon closer than the others! And I do mean that in regards to the actual story from the book itself! ...But still not entirely, because I had to squeeze in some rare pair fluff.
(There are people in the Watership Down fandom that ship Fiver and Bigwig right? I mean, I am the shipping writer, but if you squint, then maybe you can see what I do...?)
Anyhow, if you’re looking for gay rabbits, I got that for you right here. Enjoy!
No one mentioned that dating the Chief Rabbit's younger brother would be such a big issue, until they all decided to stick their noses in and bring up everything that could possibly go wrong.
Another fanfic story that I decided to work on was for my Watership Down pairing of Bigwig and Fiver! (I should probably give them a pairing name.)
This is a sort of sequel to my first story featuring them, though it doesn’t really follow much besides the pair getting together. Instead, it’s mostly just for fun and silliness while developing personalities for other characters.
For now, the story is just starting out, and just establishing the main drama or nonsense set to unfold. (And how the characters will act since they’re fairly out of character for this one.)
Atop Watership Down under the partly cloudy morning, a bulky rabbit with a dark tuft of fur on his head sat a short distance from the beach tree. A gentle gust of wind blew past as his ears twitched, and he watched the holes nearest to the tree. Forcing his attention away for a moment, he gazed further down the hill, watching a small group of his fellow rabbits silflay or play with one another. A smirk formed on his face, but he shook his head and returned his attention to the holes.
A twig snap stole his attention and he twisted around, shooting a sharp glare at another rabbit that came by. His expression softened as the pale silver rabbit lifted himself upright.
"Are you alright, Bigwig?" The older rabbit tilted his head as Bigwig slowly exhaled. His voice was steady, but there was an underlying sternness about it. "Didn't think of you as a jumpy type."
"Fine, I'm fine, Holly," insisted Bigwig. "Just wasn't expecting the noise. Or you."
"What, are you waiting for someone else then?"
"Huh?"
"Well, I was planning on giving some Owsla lessons to a few newcomers," revealed Holly. "They could use tactics and survival training. But I figured you might want to join in."
"Oh. Uh. Maybe later…?"
"Later? Maybe?" Holly's eyes widened as his ears lifted. "Who are you, and what have you done with Bigwig?"
"Look, I'm just…not prepared for that today," decided Bigwig. He glanced behind him again, watching the area around the tree. "Find Silver or Buckthorn, and one of them can help you out."
Holly's mouth dropped open as he stared at Bigwig, who rolled his eyes at his companion. After a minute, Holly hopped closer to Bigwig, and reached for his head.
"Holly, what are you doing?"
"You have to be ill."
"I told you that I'm fine."
"Then you can't be Bigwig." Holly shook his head. "Bigwig, the pride of the Watership Owsla—"
"We're all Owsla here."
"Bigwig, refusing to help his former captain and train other rabbits," carried on Holly. "Did you not get enough sleep? Did you not eat yet? What's the matter?"
"Nothing!" Bigwig huffed as he whirled around to face Holly. "Look, I'm just…!"
"…Yes?"
"Don't worry about it."
Watching as Bigwig's eyes hastily checked the holes again, Holly slowly grinned. Bigwig's face burned as the older rabbit slid in front of him and his view.
"Ah, I think I've figured it out."
"Did you now?"
"You're waiting for a certain someone, aren't you?"
"Congratulations, you're right," confirmed Bigwig, trying to look past Holly. "Can you take off now?"
"No, I want to see the poor doe that decided to put up with you!"
"Poor?" Bigwig glowered at Holly. "Why poor? I'm a good buck for anyone!"
"Gruff and grumpy Bigwig, somehow a right fit for some unlucky soul," teased Holly.
"Go jump in a pile of hraka."
"I don't think you'd like me jumping on you much."
"Would you like that demonstration to be on you after all?" Bigwig crouched down and reared back. "Because I'm about one more insult from starting a lesson here and now."
"At least that's gaining your attention," mocked Holly. "In all my years, I wouldn't have expected a lovesick Bigwig to be so thrown off and too flustered to train up and coming Owsla trainees."
"Calm down, mate, I'm not flustered or…lovesick," snapped Bigwig, mumbling the last part.
"Quite the contrary, to what your body movements are dictating," interrupted a matter-of-fact sounding voice.
With a deep inhale as he glanced up, Bigwig squeezed his eyes shut.
Normally, I don’t make lengthy excerpts for stories, but I figured this one could use it, since it details a little bit of how the story unfolds. And, you know, Watership Down isn’t quite as popular as other franchises.
Nevertheless, I thought this would be a cute story where Bigwig has begun dating Fiver, and his friends decide to point out everything that could go wrong with that.
If you’re curious enough to read the full chapter, click the link above! More will come out next year, but hopefully this is enjoyable enough for now. Either way, thank you for reading!
A fight from lack of sleep and concern leads to some bad decision making. Can Fiver find a way to make it up to Hazel? And will he learn to lean on someone else for support when he needs it?
Another gift for @mrnerdling that’s based on the pairing that I corrupted him into enjoying because I’m like that.
Hooray for Bigwig/Fiver content! ...Oh, and some brother drama between Fiver and Hazel too. And a rescue mission. Why not?
This is an alternate take on some content within the Watership Down canon, and features a few changes from what normally happens.
