October 25: What’s the biggest risk you’d like to take but haven’t been able to? What would have to happen to make you comfortable taking it?
There are two risks I’d like to take but haven’t been able to: buy a car and start a business. I actually bought a car around 8 years ago and sold it a couple of months after that due to the fact that I hate driving. I zone out a lot and fear that I might get into an accident because of it. Besides, my visual-spatial intelligence is really poor, so I’ve kind of accepted that I’m not a good driver. Sometimes, when I see people I’ve known for years are nowadays driving whereas I’m still using public transportation, I have a tingly feeling of jealousy that lasts all of 5 seconds. The jealousy goes away when I remember I really, really don’t like to drive. I would buy a car only if I knew someone else is gonna drive it. I could drive it from time to time, but I would not want to have the permanent responsibility.
The second risk I’d like to take is to start a business. I’ve always wanted to do that, but I wouldn’t like to do it alone. The only way I would feel comfortable taking that risk is if I could have at least one other person on board, either a friend or a significant other (definitely not a family member). A friend who is working with me on my master’s thesis sometimes tells me we should start a business, and I always get excited when we talk about it. I have no idea if we’ll do it or not once we graduate, but it would be worth a try.
