Land ship gone adrift. . You can see his cracked horn in these photos. I also like that these are my first photos of bighorns where they're in an environment that looks like it suits them. I'm not sure it's more aesthetically pleasing than seeing them in open fields, but I feel like these photos convey a little more about them... Idk. I probably shoulda just done video of him climbing if that was my goal. . Anyway, it's always fun to watch animals do their animal business rather than just standing around waiting out the time clock. This guy, according to my capitalist mindset, which constrains my entire perception of reality, is doing a very good job at his job of climbing up the rocks. I am sure his ramanager feels he is doing an adequate job. However he will only be receiving a raise insofar as his elevation was raised. Sorry if that doesn't make sense, it's a terrible cliche in sheep corporate culture. Something between "climbing the ladder" and "picking yourself up by your bootstraps" which are among the most idiotic human corporate idioms ever. Unfortunately, in this sad dystopian world fallen to capitalism, the bighorn sheep, like Sisyphus will spend his life literally climbing hills and without the capacity to understand metaphors, he'll never even think to try any other means of getting ahead. Thus, unlike humans, and despite their reputation, no sheep could ever become a deviant. A deviant recognized that the socially acceptable means will never lead them to achieve their goal and innovates, sometimes by doing crime. The sheep, a perpetual ritualist, may accept that he'll never achieve his goal, but will never stop trying the same thing, over and over, again. Climbing and climbing until he ceases to exist. If you want to know more about this, I wrote a chapter for a textbook on the topic in a cultural psychology textbook. Unfortunately, I was not allowed by the tyrannical editors to cover sheep or goats. But you can learn about humans and infer what you need to know about sheep. Ram on ridge. . I just about bumped into this guy before we noticed each other. We were both fixed on a prime blackberry patch along the river. . When he saw me he bolted up this basalt talus slope walked up along the ridge and disappeared to the other side. He made sort of one switchback going up, but still, it's pretty amazing how well they climb, but moreso, I think it's the strengthen and endurance. He was taking these huge bounding steps and made it up in under 30 seconds. I'd be pausing every few steps trying to get to the top and it'd probably take me 15 minutes. . Not sure if it's just because I startled him, but in my past bighorn encounters, they've never run for it like that. They usually seem to just keep and eye on me and go about their business or slowly walk away if I'm too close for them. . I spent another couple hours hoping he'd come back but never saw him again and didn't see any others which is a little odd. Because they're typically in groups. You can read about their social structure elsewhere, it's really interesting. . He also had a broken horn so I'm wondering if he lost a fight and that's why he he was on his own. . These photos of his silhouette along the ridge are my favorite from the encounter, but I did get a few pictures in focus as he climbed up.
