Just learned that the King of the Honkers, Big Jay McNeely, passed away on September 16th. Rest In Power. #BigJayMcNeely #ListenToMoreJazz (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BohYU4VHEss/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=w6i3lpqvt2yj
At the dawn of rock ’n’ roll, he put the saxophone front and center, sometimes while lying on his back, kicking his legs, or jumping off the stage.
RIP #BigJayMcNeely, the king of the West Coast #RhythmNBlues honk 'n' squealers. He was based out of LA, & was one of many mid-century sax players inspired by the legendary Illinois Jacquet. He was also the subject of photographer #BillWilloughby's famous photograph which captured the power of RnB to bring people to an apparent state of ecstasy(?) There is A LOT of meaning in this photo. It brings to mind the subject of white America's relationship with African-American music, and its continued refusal to respect the community from which that music was born. Until that changes, I will continue to drive the message that records were not created in a vacuum, but were in fact created by people with names, faces, stories, & identities. I encourage lovers of this music to seek out the stories & learn the history & context of the music. I'm certain Cooky Parker will be crying a tear or two today https://www.instagram.com/p/Bn1pE9nBrOF/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ta72lmqgm1ww
