Daily fish fact #569
Whalefish!
They exhibit some of the more extreme cases of sexual dimorphism in vertebrates! Adult females have wide, large jaws, and a stomach that stretches out to catch big prey, but adult males, often called bignose fish, have jaws that are fused shut, large bumps on their snouts used for smelling, and a shriveled up stomach. The males live off of food they ate as juveniles and their enlarged liver and use their enhanced smell to find a female in the deep sea!
