Big Shiny Toby

Certain songs are so familiar that I would call them inherent favourites.  I know every riff, bridge, and crescendo.[1]  I may not even have liked some of these songs when I first heard them, it just doesn’t matter anymore.[2]  The unadulterated number of listens makes it such that when that first telltale utterance, synth-blast, or quotation from that obscure speech kicks in on any of these sacred tracks I get all the thrill and adrenaline of a ten-year old girl just hearing the new Katy Perry banger for the first time.

Every single song on Big Shiny Tunes 2 falls within this category of untouchable, eternal favourites.  Prodigy, Blur, Chemical Brothers, Radiohead…the album absolutely refuses to quit.  Devin and I love this album.  We’ve both listened to it seven billion times.  That’s why it was so special when our new third for the Winnipeg-Toronto leg—Toby Hughes—specifically requested if we had it about two hours out of Winnipeg.  Yes we do Toby, thank you for sharing our beliefs.

Toby is one-sixth of the Winnipeg improv juggernaut Crum- Outside Joke, and along with RobYn Slade hosted us through two sweaty weeks in Winnipeg.  We spent the better part of everyday with him as he and the rest of the outstanding ‘Peg improv community showed us the ropes of our first ever Fringe. 

And now he’s in the Camry, and will join us for one of our three shows at Comedy Bar this week (see the schedule for details).  We’re so excited to have him.  In the words of Blur, woo hoo.

[1] (I would say “word” but the only words I know to any songs are from high school jazz choir and Paul Simon’s Graceland).

[2] About a year ago I removed the “Plays” category from my iTunes toolbar so that it was less obvious which songs I’d been jamming to obsessively.  No one will witness my Cake listening, no one!
