"Bikini No. 4" by Yang She Wei, 2008
Series: Bikini
The Art Scoop: Yang She Wei looks at how pressure builds behind appearances.
Part of his Bikini Series, this work reflects expectations placed on women to live perfect lives - education achieved, career secured, relationships intact. On the surface, everything appears fine. Underneath, it isn’t.
Yang describes this as the creation of “an embarrassment in an outwardly confident lady and bitterness in a seemingly sweet nature.” The image holds that contradiction.
This sense of being worn down - “hurting bit by bit,” as the artist puts it - is a familiar condition in modern urban life.
