It was so nice to hear from you and I am delighted to know that you are planning a trip for this month.

I would love to see you on August 6th, when you are here, and I will ask my secretary to call you to set a definitive time when we can meet.

Princess Grace on the catwalk

MOVIE star princess Grace Kelly was astonished when she saw some of the film of her life before she became Monaco's first lady.

You can see it in the American-made fairy-tale saga ONCE UPON A TIME . . . IS NOW (BBC-1, 7.15).

There's a film of her as a model on a catwalk, demonstrating an exercising machine with a vibrating belt and doing a cigarette commercial - even though she's a nonsmoker.

Sandra Smith Allyn took a year to make the programme with her husband Bill.

She says: "The toughest and longest part was tracking down early film of Princess Grace." 

But the Allyns did have something going for them when they first approached Princess Grace with the idea of making the film. "Bill used to act with her in summer stage shows," says Sandra.

American actress Lee Grant, links the show.

There are excerpts from some of the Grace Kelly films, and contributions from Hollywood personalities James Stewart, William Holden, Stanley Kramer and Alfred Hitchcock.

Kramer says he thinks Grace was too young for her first big role in his film "High Noon."

“But we follow him with a clip from the film which disproves it," says Sandra.

The programme is followed by the movie "Dial M for Murder," In which Grace Kelly starred with Ray Milland.

Letter from Princess Grace of Monaco to her friend William "Bill" Allyn dated September 20, 1977, and sent from the Monegasque princely family home in Paris, France (18 Square de L´Avenue Foch. 75116).

William Allyn was an actor/producer and friend of Grace’s from her Hollywood days who reconnected with her in the mid-1960s. With her cooperation, he also produced a 1977 NBC documentary on her titled, Once Upon a Time is Now … The Story of Princess Grace. 

Letter transcription below:

Sept. 20th, 1977. Dear Bill It was good to hear from you. Your show on music in the sixties sounds like an overwhelming project but very exciting. I don't really like the idea of changing PATTY-CAKE MAN as it is sort of like trying to let out or take in the seams of a dress. it just never hangs right afterward. I will try to think up an idea on the fashion world with new characters. Incidentally, I recently suggested to Robert Dornhelm a book that I always thought could make an adorable film (in the west of Ireland). He read it and started writing a screen-play which i hope he is finishing in California right now. I asked him to get in touch with you. Unfortunately, I don't know how to get in contact with him just now, but Rupert might. The title is SPANISH GOLD by George A. Birmingham published by Methuen & C. Ltd. London 36 Essex Street, Strand WC2. A delightful tale of searching for a buried Spanish treasure. I naturally have it all cast (in my mind) with Albert Finney, David Niven, and Cryl Cussack. It could be something enchanting. I made the mistake of seeing "Valentino". Poor Rudi Nureyev. He is really quite good but the director should be shot at dawn and hung on the nearest lamppost. No taste, no talent no respect for the era., an outrageous sham which switches from high camp to slapstick and played as if everyone in the audience was deaf. Bitterly dissapointing. Maybe if I took dope I could swallow some of these new directors because they obviously do. I was amused by the car advertisement, particularly as I never owned a Mercedes nor any car in California, I always rented one! The premature announcement of the poetry readings caused the press to exaggerate their importance somewhat, as usual. But It will be a few days in February and the beginning of March, the same kind of thing as in Edinburgh. The article I read made it sound as though I was joining the Royal Shakespeare Co. (as if they'd have me!). If you get to England please give a call. We may get over sometime in October. Some wonderful things going on in the theatre just now. I have yet to see the tapes of our program as our machine was on the blink all summer. Love to you both, Grace.

"Dear Bill,

t was so nice to hear from you after all these years, and I am so pleased to know that you are working with David Swift at Columbia.

Your career sounds full of interesting endeavors and I sincerely wish you every success.

I will be thinking of you on the 23rd and wishing you a very happy birthday. Our little girl will be eight years old, which seems hardly possible. She is very grown up so you will have two of us to teach the tango.

If you are ever in Europe and near the Cote d'Azur, please let me know and try to stop by for a visit.

LETTER FROM PRINCESS GRACE TO AMERICAN ACTOR WILLIAM ALLYN DATED IN OCTOBER 5, 1966)

"Oct. 5th, Dear Bill - You are a darling to think of my babes in such a sweet way. They are thrilled with your cute gifts - many many thanks. We are just back after a quick visit to my mother then a week in N.Y. & another in Paris. The two children are in school & I am back at work too, catching up on mail & obligations. We saw 'Mame' & 'Man from La Mancha'. Loved both. Was disappointed in Lincoln Sq. theaters. How did they manage with so much money to make them so ugly - no small task. Loved seeing you - please come back soon. As ever, Grace."

William "Bill" Allyn (1927-1999) was a director, producer, and actor, known for Peyton Place (1964), To Be or Not to Be (1983), and Cousins (1989). 

Mr and Mrs Allyn were lifelong friends of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier.

I will attend part of the Red Cross convention in the Philippines early nov. 9 and will stop overnight in LA on my return - I will call before -
