Jawbox pretty much claim the throne as my favourite post-hardcore band, and bandleader J. Robbins is among my favourite songwriters, but their self-titled final album is a tough listen if you're not in the right headspace to handle its multitude of intricacies. That said, there are a few moments whose melody and simplicity foreshadow what was to follow (Robbins and guitarist Bill Barbot started Burning Airlines after Jawbox's demise), and for me they're some of the most enduring moments on the album. Since I usually tend to refer to the downbeat and measured "Iodine," I figured I'd go instead with the opening track and lead single, "Mirrorful." That weird staggered repetition of the chorus lyrics by Robbins and Barbot really should not work at all on paper, but somehow it absolutely does. What an absolute jam.
