You may remember that every Veteran's Day for 30 years, Charles M. Schulz (himself a World War II veteran) would mention his friend and fellow vet (and fellow cartoonist) Bill Mauldin.

Mauldin was indeed one of the greatest American cartoonists. One of his most enduring creations was Willie and Joe, soldier characters who appeared in his cartoons predominantly from 1940 to 1948.

Schulz once featured the characters in one of his Veteran's Day strips, marking a rare appearance of adult characters in a Peanuts strip.
