full metal jacket (stanley kubrick) my fatal flaw is that i unironically and enthusiastically love kubrick’s work the way film bros do; that being said, full metal jacket is an intense and fucked up and (i hate using this word but) genius approach to vietnam war film as a genre. nobody is likable (though some people’s choices are clearly worse than others), everyone in this movie gives amazing performances, and it’s a film that uses distanciation and cinematographic technique extraordinarily well

moonstruck (norman jewison) cher in one of her finest acting roles, sweet, genuinely funny, what else can i say?? i don’t love romcoms unless they’re done right, and this is one that i was actually moved to watch more than once

near dark (kathryn bigelow) the only vampire movie i love besides what we do in the shadows, bigelow plays so well with the combination of generic tropes she pulls from, it’s bloody and dirty and occasionally quite funny and moving, and bill paxton is hot in it, so A+ all around
