Pycnosorus globosus syn. Craspedia globosa (billy buttons)
Every so often, I run into a flower and I think to myself, "You're not from around these parts, are you?" Billy buttons are native to parts of Australia and New Zealand, so I really wasn't expecting to run into them in front of a fast food joint in downtown Vancouver.

#1754 - Craspedia glauca - Billy Buttons
AKA Woollyheads
The Asteraceae (AKA Compositaceae) is a gigantic plant family, rivalled only by the orchids. Nearly all of them have composite flowers, where hundreds of tiny flowers are massed together into a single inflorescence, with enlarged flowers resembling petals around the edge. The result is something that looks like a large single flower - flowers that include daisies, asters, sunflowers, and some of the most familiar wildflowers and weeds in the world.
Then you have species like this Craspedia, that never bother with the fake petals around the edge.
Species are found over much of Australia, and large areas of New Zealand. They’re most diverse in alpine and subalpine areas.
