The Oscars again—that annual rite of self-importance on steroids. I remember the year everyone thought Madonna was going to be nominated for Evita. She wasn’t, but she showed up to present an award anyway. After she left the stage, emcee Billy Crystal commended her for her courage, and everyone applauded as if she’d just walked through a war zone to rescue a group of orphans. Courageous? For handing out an award? Hell, the bag of goodies she got for doing that came with enough toys and prizes to pay my rent for a year.
