His Dark Materials (2019-), 1x05 - The Lost Boy
“When I am frightened, I shall master my fear.”
I got to s1 ep 5 of my rewatch of HDM and it still messes me up that during Billy’s death scene, you can see cuts on his head where the Bolvangar staff were not even careful when shaving his hair off 😭 poor little thing deserved so much better 💔
I always forget, until I reread the books, that in Northern Lights, Billy Costa survives and it's Tony Makarios with the Ratter daemon that Lyra finds. Who in film and TV decided to make Ma Costa suffer like that with the death of her son???
I ADORE Ma Costa because she’s so incredibly loving yet a COMPLETE BADASS
She goes through so much heartbreak with her son being kidnapped, her other son falling to pieces over it, other Gyptian children being taken, Lyra struggling with everything and her kidnapped son being returned only for him to be nothing but an empty shell and then DYING
Not once is she rude, snappy or generally negative to anyone (except those that deserve it). She takes Lyra in as if she were her own. And when confronted with one of the doctors that separated her son from his daemon and took his life, she ensures that Billy is the last thing he thinks about before she SNAPS HIS NECK
In conclusion: Ma Costa is underrated and deserves so much love
Wow, this week's episode of His Dark Materials was really just Lyra being told "Ask your dad! No, not Lord Asriel, your other dad! Have you tried asking your other dad? You should probably ask your mum- again, not Mrs Coulter, your other mum! Alright, now go ask your new dad! If that doesn't work, ask your new bear-dad!" And then finally, after talking to all of her adoptive parents, finally getting the go-ahead to rescue Billy.
She found herself sobbing, and Pantalaimon was whimpering too, and in both of them there was a passionate pity and sorrow for the half-boy. (Chapter Thirteen, “The Golden Compass”/“Northern Lights”)
