Billy Lawrence, Brigette McWilliams, Brandy, Brownstone's Mimi, Nicci, and Maxee (1994)
mark “prince markie dee” morales was one of pioneers of hip-hop. as one-third of the 1980’s rap trio the fat boys, mark landed a a few songs into the top 40 on both the r&b and pop chart and scored a slew of gold selling albums.
the fat boys were also one of the first hip-hop acts to parlay their success as recording artists into roles in motion pictures included 1985’s hip-hop classic “krush groove” and “disorderlies” in 1987.
by the late 1980’s, the fat boys’ brand of novelty rap was out of step with the emerging harder edge sounds of erik b. & rakim and EPMD. mark would transition into an extraordinary career as a song writer and producer after the group’s disbandment.
in 1992 mark produced mary j. blige’s first pop top 10 single “real love.” he would go on to produce hit singles for mariah carey, marc anthony and jennifer lopez.
mark released his debut album in 1992 under the moniker prince markie dee and the soul convention. the album’s lead single “trippin’ out” charted inside the r&b top 40 peaking at #25.
i remember watching BET’s “video soul” when he stopped by to premiere the video for “tripping’ out” and talk about the album. he was gushing over the new singer he discovered. a singer who remains one the 90’s most underrated and overlooked singers - billy lawrence.
i bought the prince markie dee album. the follow-up single “typical reasons” was an even better song but sadly, like it’s predecessor did not find at place at pop radio.
mark remained one of music’s most sought out producers working with father mc, brownstone, luther vandross father mc, jade and al b. sure.
mark “prince markie dee” morales died suddenly on thursday, february 18, 2021. a day before his 53rd birthday.
rest easy, mark.
