I wrote up some Voltron Challenge Coin rules for BillytheBrickCosplay that are now being included with coin purchases! [Buy Your Coin]
Rules are being hosted on his site [link], but also:
The rules of the game should be given or explained to everyone carrying a coin. It’s rude to call out a challenge if you haven’t broken down the way it works ahead of time. Only people owning (or currently borrowing) a coin are expected to participate.
A challenge is initiated by drawing your coin and holding it in the air by whatever means possible and state, scream, shout, or otherwise verbally acknowledge that you are initiating a “Voltron Coin Check.” Another less vocal method is to firmly place the coin on the bar, table, or floor (this should produce an audible noise which can be easily heard by those being challenged). Tapping the coin until the challenged people realize a challenge has been issued is a valid option (non-verbal challenges are, by default, for a round). If you accidentally drop your coin and it produces a noticeable noise, you have “accidentally” issued a coin check. (This is the price of not properly taking care of your coin.)
Coins can be traded as a matter of strategy. If one person owns multiple coins, they can also be presented strategically. Only one coin can be produced in answer to a challenge.
Coins must be carried at all times, and challenges can be called out ANYWHERE and at ANYTIME. You can only take four steps in order to reach your coin. Having your coin with you and easily accessible is a matter of honor, and the defense of the universe.
The challenger must clearly state whether the challenge is for a drink or a round of drinks.
If the person challenged fails to produce a coin, the challenge must be honored and drinks must be either purchased or provided. You can challenge one person or an entire group.
If everyone who is challenged produces a coin, the challenger is on the hook to provide drinks. Be careful who you challenge.
Control your coin at all times. Do not hand over your coin to another person in the event of answering a challenge, this is the same as giving up your coin such that you do not have one to answer the challenge. However, if a person places a coin down in answer to a challenge, it can be picked up to be examined, but that is not considered giving, and the examiner is honor-bound to place the coin back where they got it. The examiner cannot challenge while they hold someone’s coin. If a coin has been handed over, it can be returned in exchange for a “reasonable ransom.”
A coin is a coin. It is not a bracelet, belt buckle, key chain, necklace, etc. If your coin has had a hole drilled in it or otherwise modified beyond being carried inside a pouch, it cannot be used to answer a challenge.
If a coin is lost, replacement is up to the individual. A new coin should be acquired at the earliest opportunity -- losing a coin and not replacing it does not absolve the owner of responsibility in answering challenges.
By default, a coin check is only to ensure people are carrying a coin. A challenge can be stated to also be a “Lion Check” at which point the face value of the coins comes into play. The lowest “rank” challenged is on the hook to provide the drink or round of drinks. The ranking works as follows: Voltron > (head) Black Lion > (arms) Red Lion == Green Lion > (legs) Yellow Lion == Blue Lion. If someone is wearing a costume (or partial costume) to match their coin, it outranks a Voltron coin in the same rank order of head > arms > legs. A person cosplaying as the combined Voltron robot and carrying a Voltron coin would win all rank challenges. In the case of even ranks, the challenge is considered a tie.
