Romantic Binding Material
While working on barcoding some of our rare books, Alison came across this scrap of a romance used as binding material in a travel/geography book from 1866, Across the Continent: A Summer's Journey to the Rocky Mountains, the Mormons, and the Pacific States. First published in 1865 by Samuel Bowles & Company, this particular edition is by Hurd & Houghton out of New York. The publication includes two pages of advertisements for other books published by Hurd & Houghton. Maybe one of these books was the source of of our romantic binding scrap.
