Brisbane Hustlers women's team played their first match
The Brisbane Hustlers’ inaugural women’s team have celebrated playing their first match, and are calling out for more players to join them.
The Hustlers are Brisbane’s gay and inclusive rugby union club, and proudly celebrated their 20th anniversary last year.
A few years back, the Hustlers put a call out for female rugby players to form the club’s first all-female team.
On March 19, the Hustlers women’s team played their first match against the Brisbane Irish in the Queensland Suburban Rugby Union competition.
That all-female match made history and was years in the making, the Hustlers said.
“Our Brisbane Hustlers women’s team played their first-ever match, and what a debut it was,” the club wrote on Instagram.
“While the scoreboard didn’t go our way, the team put on massive hits, showed incredible heart, and made us all proud.”
More players needed for Brisbane Hustlers women’s team
Hustlers player Megan was one of the female players who answered the call-out in 2023. She was among the seven players on the field for the team’s first match in Brisbane this month.
Megan told QNews the Hustlers are searching for more female players to expand their trailblazing team and compete in more competitions.
“We train twice a week on Monday and Wednesday nights at Norths Rugby Club in Wavell Heights,” she said.

Brisbane is hosting the Bingham Cup, the World Cup of gay rugby, next year. Bingham has now twice included the Amanda Mark Cup, a new event at the international tournament for women’s rugby.
“We’d love to get into any and every competition we can,” Megan told us.
“But we need to expand our team first and hopefully get a lot more girls to join to make it possible.”
On May 4, you can meet the Brisbane Hustlers at Big Gay Day at The Wickham. Megan said some of the players will join the annual Reef vs Beef dance battle against the Brisbane Tritons water polo club.
The Brisbane Hustlers host regular “come and try” days at Norths Rugby Club for people of all ages, genders and skill levels. You can find out more and contact the Hustlers via Facebook and Instagram.

Bingham Cup comes to Brisbane next year
The Brisbane Hustlers last year won their bid to host the 2026 Bingham Cup and Amanda Mark Cup.
The Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Tournament, known as the Bingham Cup, is the biennial World Cup of gay rugby.
Since 2002 it’s been held in different host cities around the world. It’s named after US 9/11 hero and gay rugby pioneer Mark Bingham.
The Brisbane Hustlers flew to Italy last year to compete at the Bingham Cup 2024.
When in Rome, the Hustlers made their final pitch – the culmination of years of work – to host the 2026 event.
They won, and thousands of overseas players and supporters will travel to Brisbane for the gay rugby tournament next year.
Hustlers President Steve Bevan said, “We can’t wait to showcase our world-class rugby fields to players from around the globe.”
