Right versus wrong; good versus evil.
Human versus monster.
In a world filled with absolutes, Luo Binghe doesn’t know where he belongs.
Weak and delicate, his mother had left him when he was young, too young, and the kindly old washer woman who took him in had explained that the world wasn’t as simple as people made it out to be.
Then why, Luo Binghe wonders, do the other children throw rocks at him and laugh at his horns and claws? Why do they call him “freak” and “devil” instead of his name—the name his mother used to whisper so proudly, so lovingly, in his ear before she died?
Because he’s ugly? Because he’s stupid? Because his monster father hates him so much that the old man disappeared even before he was born?
“Because you’re different,” the washer woman tells him, a hand rubbing soothing circles on his back. “People are scared of ‘different’.”
“But I don’t want to be different,” Luo Binghe says, trembling, voice hitching on sob.
“Different means you’re ‘special,’” the washer woman says. Her scent calms him; whiffs of soap and congee and all things familiar. “Your mom and dad made you special.”
“Sh-should I find some monsters?” Luo Binghe murmurs. “Maybe they’d see me as special?”
The washer woman hesitates. “It’s safer for you here, Binghe,” she says, then. “With the rest of us humans.”
But he isn’t safer here.
The beatings continue, the taunting and name-calling. It becomes a cycle of fear, and safety, and right back to fear again, the washer woman’s gentle reassurance having less and less effect with each passing year.
Then, like his mother, the washer woman wilts and fades. Leaves Luo Binghe entirely on his own, wandering the streets at the age of fourteen. Scared, miserable, angry.
So very angry.
When the next gang of teenagers surround him in an alleyway, maniacal grins shadowed in the flickering light of a streetlamp, Luo Binghe snaps.
It’s humans who have been attacking him, he realizes. It’s humans who bully the weak and step on the downtrodden. His mother and the kindly old washer woman were the exception to a norm of humans who care only about power and control. Who hurt others for the sheer fun of it.
Humans are the scum of this world.
Claws dripping, Luo Binghe swipes blood off his cheek with the back of his hand. Around his feet laid the bodies of his would-be torturers, the stench of their terror still lingering in the air.
Luo Binghe breathes in the fear, fingers flexing. Fills his lungs with it, relishes the taste of it on his tongue.
It’s time to release his other half.
It’s time to find his monster kin.

What does it mean to be happy and secure; to be rid of the devils in one's heart?
One man, two fates. The king. The disciple.
(aka parallels, parallels everywhere)
This is a character study comparing post-canon Bing-ge and Bing-mei, written for Day 5 of #BingheWeek! I really wanted to delve into the similarities and differences between them. So here’s a side-by-side POV reflecting either Luo Binghe at his apex for that :)
