Going through some old docs of mine and I rediscovered an old au idea I had for a Qijiu & Bingyue fic with Yue Qingyuan at the center of it all. The entire fic from what I gathered from rereading my word doc is basically an au where Yue Qingyuan claims Luo Binghe as a disciple without realizing that Shen Jiu wanted him, which just fuels Shen Jiu's anger towards Yue Qingyuan even more and also causes him to develop a hatred of Binghe like he does in PIDW. But this time he doesn't have any of the authority he originally had over Binghe, so he can't abuse him the way he did in PIDW. I had a lot more on my mind for it and did write a bit more about it in my word doc, but my brain never really focused on the idea enough to actually write about where canon would diverge and where it would stay the same. Thankfully I finally got back into danmei and specifically SVSSS again, so now I'm reworking the idea so that I at least can share a vague outline of it because I honestly have no idea when I'll write the fic and I really want to talk about it.

It's an unlikely connection but one that is fascinating to consider. They both lived their life as a lie, for dramatically different reasons, and wore opposite masks to face the world with. Alver pretending to be the 'perfect prince' and (og) Cale pretending to be the 'worst trash'. Alver in order to overcome the way his family oppressed him and (og) Cale in order to protect his family. Their similar yet contradicting methods of handling conflict would make their interactions with one another all the more fascinating. Also, Alver is a squirrel and (og) Cale is a dog, let him bark at that squirrel lol.

Propaganda: Tianlang Jun has a thing for cold and ruthless beautiful people and Shen Jiu/Qingqiu hits all those marks. Tianlang Jun is persistent enough to try and keep trying. He'd be SOOOO shameless about it and Shen Qingqiu would be a salty mfer until the third time he punts Tianlang Jun across a lake and he comes back for more. Tianlang Jun likes human books and poetry and music and Shen Qingqiu is the peak lord of the scholarly peak. Tianlang Jun would probably hit him with the "I die every day we're apart" line and Shen Jiu goes "Then perish" and Tianlang Jun is even more interested. Eventually Shen Qingqiu brings Tianlang Jun to Qing Jing Peak and everyone's like "What do u have there" and he says "a fan" which Tianlang Jun IS a fan of legendary romantic tragicomedy The Lamentable Romance of Autumn and Death by prolific author Sleeping Willow Flower who also wrote the Epic of Tianqiu. But also Shen Qingqiu is holding a fan there. No one is amused but Tianlang Jun is there to stay.

Hm. What if the kind shishu Luo Binghe had a crush on wasn't Shen Quingqiu?

Yue Quingyuan is a perfect man. Even though he wouldn't make Shen Quingqiu stop abusing the boy, he was always unflinchingly kind to the child.

Whenever he saw Binghe, he'd look at him kindly, try to exchange a few words. One time he came across the young disciple slumped under a wall and nursing a split lip. Heartbroken, the Yue-Qi crouched by the boy and handed him a handkerchief to wipe the blood with. When Binghe started, shixiong put a hand on his head to calm him and spoke to him gently until the kerchief was accepted.

He wanted to apologize to the child. For his inaction. for the fact he could not act - if he showed the slightest interest in the boy, Shen-Jiu would grow even more violent towards him just to hurt Qui-Ge's feelings. He couldn't say anything.

The boy was stubborn and dedicated, hopefully he'll be able to grow in power enough to protect himself. Hopefully, it will not break him. Hopefully, the child won't become like his teacher, bitter and cold. Hopefully.

Now, from Binghe's point of view - the most beautiful, powerful and gentle man smiled at him and petted his head. He never thought about the Sect Leader, saw him a scarce few times and only knew his reputation.

A cultivator so powerful that just a flint of his sword caused the enemies to run in panic. A man so gentle that even the War God Liu Quingge calmed down in his presence. Shrewd politician and leader respected amongst all the sects.

And that man spared a moment for Luo Binghe? Gave him a kerchief? A kind word?

His eyes were so kind and so clear, his touch so gentle.

Binghe was enchanted.

And later - later! - after the Skinner demon mission, when Shizun went into the caves to meditate, the Sect Leader visited the Quing Jing to check on the students in their master's absence and spoke to Luo Binghe about the mission! He asked Binghe to recount the battle and then praised him for killing the demon. His hand rested in the boy's shoulder and squeezed gently.

Binghe carried the memory of that touch with him for years. The kind light in the Zhangmen-shixiong's eyes. The gentleness of his voice.

...the way Shen Quingqiu treated the man like dirt beneath his feet - the same way he treated Binghe.

A man like that didn't deserve Shizun's scorn. Didn't deserve to be dismissed and scowled at by that hateful man. He deserved to be respected and loved. He deserved better than Shen Quingqiu's poison.

Yue Quingyuan deserved someone better.
