Los bioelementos
Los bioelementos son elementos químicos (de los que en la tabla periódica) que forman parte de la materia viva.
El carbono (C), el hidrógeno (H), el oxígeno (O), el nitrógeno (N), el fósforo (P) y el azufre (S) están presentes en el 96,2 % de la materia viva Por lo que son bioelementos primarios. Se unen entre ellos mediante enlaces covalentes, de hidrógeno o sulfúricos para formar las biomoléculas.
El resto de bioelementos se conocen como bioelementos secundarios y pueden clasificarse en función de su abundancia. Los bioelementos más abundantes conforman el 1% y son el sodio (Na), el potasio (K), el magnesio (Mg) y el cloro (Cl). En el organismo de los seres vivos actúan como iones y cationes para realizar funciones como: la transmisión del impulso nervioso en la sinapsis, formar parte de la estructura de los caparazones, ayudar a coagular la sangre o incluso formar parte del pigmento de clorofila.
Por último, los oligoelementos que son los bioelementos que se encuentran en una abundancia del 0,1%. Los principales son el hierro (Fe), el cinc (Zn), el cobre (Cu), el cobalto (Co), el manganeso (Mn), el litio (Li), el silicio (Si), el yodo (I) y el flúor (F). Sus funciones también son muy diversas, entre ellas destacan: formar parte de la vitamina B12, la secreción de neurotransmisores, ayudar a la formación de la hormona tiroxina o construir el esmalte de uñas y dientes.
