Amazing man, amazing work!
Our floating wetlands are doing great this summer!
“Using Water to Mimic Nature” in ASLA’s blog The Dirt
Last Friday I got to attend a regional conference for the Society of Wetland Scientists. My favorite presentation was from a company call Biohabitats. The speaker described this really interesting version of a wetland restoration project where they implemented some really innovative - yet simple - techniques to improve the quality of a suburban stream. They added chunks of wood to their sand filter to promote nitrogen and phosphorus removal by providing a substrate and carbon source for bacterial growth. That is so smart.
(I couldn't find a photo of the wetland sand filter, but Biohabitats was responsible for those floating wetland mats I've seen in Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The speaker told me how the mats are really good at providing habitat for macroinvertebrates and fish, something desperately needed in the Inner Harbor.)
