#biol 335

Hi, I was just wondering if you would recommend taking BIOL335 in the summer or winter? I've heard mixed reviews about both

If it’s the only course you’re taking in the summer, it won’t be too bad. What takes time is going through all the practice problems, they teach you the basic concepts in class, but exams get tricky when they make you apply the concepts. You’ll want plenty of time to focus on getting your hands on as many practice questions as possible.

Do you happen to have any past midterms from Biol 335? I would like more practice, but we aren't really given many practice questions. It's summer, so I don't think they're selling any past exams right now either. I don't know where to get a hold of any past exams?

How did you find Biol 335? I heard it was a really tough course, and looking at the class averages from the previous years, they seem a bit on the lower side. Were the exams fair? What's the format of the exams and the kinds of questions they ask? I'm debating on whether or not I should take it. In case I do take it, how would you study for this course?

It was definitely hard, but the topics taught at very interesting and applicable if you ever want to further in research in Biology, as both Zoology and Botany both use molecular biology lab techniques. 

The exams were okay, some questions were easier than others, some didn’t make much sense, the midterm was relatively easy, but then I think everyone did super shitty on the final (myself included) so the average ended up being 61% or something…LOL. 

The questions were similar to the questions you’d receive in tutorial.

However, if you don’t need to take the course and you’re not interested in molecular biology, don’t take it, it’s not worth it to pull down your GPA, especially if you don’t plan to take any courses that need 335 as a pre-req. Although, I’ve heard that the courses that need Biol 335 as a pre-req tend to be easier than 335 (I took Biol 436 and the average was 80% and I ended up getting above average). 

Biol 335 does help though for the Biol 341 lab.

Do you know some good third and fourth year BIOL courses about Genetics?

I really enjoyed BIOL 436, it’s genomics though, so it’s looking at things from a bigger point of view and seeing how different genes interact to give different phenotypes. 

BIOL 335, is Molecular Genetics, it’s the pre-req for most 400-level genetics/genomic courses, it’s hard, albeit very, very interesting! 

I’m taking BIOL 458 right now and although it’s about Developmental Neurobiology, there’s a lot of genetics involved with it. It’s a pretty interesting course and the professor is hilarious!

do you mean that your friends 9th edition textbook differed from the 10th ed txtbk but your 9th ed solutions manual was fine for the 10th ed textbook? Because im having trouble getting the 10th ed textbook, wondering if the 9th could substitute for it. When you used it, were all the questions the same? Were the numbering different?

No, the 9th edition solutions don't go with the 10th edition textbook. The material is the same in both books, only the questions differ a bit - both in number and in question type, you can just go to Woodward to borrow a 10th edition!

Oh I didn't realize that the 8th edition for bio 234 would be so old, I thought it might have been like bio 112 where theres a new edition every year. So when you took the class 2 years ago, you were using the 10th edition?

When I was taking Biol 234, it was a new course, the Biology program was being re-vamped, and my professor decided to try a new textbook, that textbook didn’t work very well, but we had questions drawn from it every week for tutorial. My friend who took the course the summer after said that they changed the textbook to the Intro to Genetic Analysis one and they were using the 10th edition with questions from the text used for tutorial again. 

Biol 335 uses the same textbook, and I took this course this year and questions were taken from the 10th edition for our tutorial sessions. 

But aside from the questions (only a few questions were different and in different order), all the editions have the same material.
