Rebekah Marine is known in the fashion industry as the ‘bionic model’. The 28 year old was born without a right forearm but was fitted with an advanced prosthetic. Although she was subject to ridicule and rejection in her early years, she decided to use her prosthetic and influence in the industry to spread the message of diversity and inclusion within the modeling world.
'Hearing a lot of rejection isn't easy for anybody, and when it's based on your looks, it's really hard to embrace because you can't really change the fact that I have one arm.'
'It's so important to include more diverse models, because after all, nearly one in five people in America have a disability, 'We should be celebrating uniqueness, not conforming to what the media thinks is beautiful.'
In 2015, she modeled for Nordstrom’s anniversary catalog and walked in New York Fashion Week for Anna Land, Archana Kochler and FTL Moda. Rebekah also serves as an ambassador for the Lucky Fin Project, a non-profit organization that supports children who were born without limbs. Alongside motivational speeches and appearances, she is also the spokesperson for Touch Bionics, a prosthetic company that provided her with a state of the art prosthetic arm that responds to muscle movements.
"I think it's so cool to be at the front of the line of this change, and being able to open the door and inspire others to open their minds to different models," Marine said.
