I have to tell you. I read it this afternoon after work and it was a great treat. I adore Urz. I hated that you couldn’t take him with you in game. I really wanted to. And my Shepard really bonded with him when she was on that planet. I mean every time we were back on Tuchanka (which because I did the missions weird was more than a few times) she had to stop in.

Bingo Winner- Bioticfox!

Our first commenting bingo has reported in, and it's Bioticfox! Bioticfox has been with us since last year, when they wrote one of the definitive M!Shepard/Kaiden Alenko/James Vega fics. And though they remain a great writer, this year they have out-done themselves year in their commenting output. For you see, Bioticfox didn't just thank their own author; they instead wrote so many comments they did a complete black-out on their card! Among other things that they've commented on: fic that features all kinds of races, from angarians to quarians and everywhere in between; reviewing a fic set on the lawless land of Omega or Kadara, reviewing a fic over 8K, and reviewing over 20 works in the collection.

And most impressively, Bioticfox has shown no sign of stopping and has in fact gone for a second comment card! We salute you, brave bioticfox! Even James, as shown above, has felt the need to memorialize you for your bravery. Ignore the tears; he's still a bit verklempt about it.

Sorry it’s not very exciting... This was supposed to be my MEBB, but I couldn’t get it finished. At this rate, it should be done by MEBB 2020. >_<

Mshenko - Drinking together after the war

Another lovely prompt from @bioticfox I’m sorry this is not fluff. (mentions of death of major character as well as others) Still open for prompts or stuff but it may take a while.

The bottle had been found in the ruins of what used to be perhaps liquor store. All the other bottles had been destroyed as the building fell or the ensuing fire, the evidence not yet been cleared from this block. Kaidan had stumbled upon it, buried in the rebel still in its wooden box, somehow intact.There was burnt out remains of a more modern plastic safety box melted shapeless, colouring the wood yellow amidst the burn marks. Kaidan’s pack had been almost empty at this point as it’s late in the day, the sun halfway down already, and it’s been really long when he had had anything that nice so he packs it up and then does last sweep in the ruins, marking the remains with paint so others would know he had done a preliminary search. There’s a few bodies, a limb sticking up from the rabble, a burned lump in a shadow that’s almost unidentifiable as human being. These he marks in his map, says a silent prayer in their memory and heads back. Other teams have the same destination and Kaidan spots Vega, carrying a huge sack on his back. He joins Kaidan and grins nodding to the others back.

“Find anything good? I found someone’s can stash. Meatballs and Spam for everyone,” he laughs and Kaidan smirks back, clapping Vega’s shoulder.

“That’s good. I found just a bottle of whiskey. thinking of sharing it with Shepard this night.” Kaidan’s voice is a soft rumble. Vega makes a small surprised noise and looks down at him.

“Shepard? But Loco can’t…”

“I know but we had a contract with him and this is the first time I got my hands on a bottle that would do the trick. I’ll give the rest to you and Steve after we have made a dent in it. Better that way. The hangover would be epic,” Kaidan interrupts and fastens his step. James mutters something that Kaidan doesn’t catch, don’t want to catch. The problem with Vega is that he’s huge with long legs and even on uneven ground he catches up too quickly.

“Hey, Major, if you need anything… To talk or get drunk you know that we’re there. Me and Steve. The others as well if they weren’t,” Vega bumbles between his words and Kaidan hides his annoyance behind a dry smile.

“I know. Thank you but I’m good.” Vega doesn’t seem impressed but they are near the recon point now, a heavy military grade ground vehicle waiting for the search teams to come in for the night.  A corporal comes towards them in a battered field gear, though there has been no fighting for four months. It says something about the state of things when they could not sub proper gear on those doing the grunt work in the hazardous ruins most of the cities on Earth had been reduced to. Kaidan takes the paper map (they are reduced to this now. All their technology gone now that electricity is rare and reserved for hospitals and the most important communication ports.) kneeling near a bolder and starting to stick his pins on it. Green for supplies, blue for water source, red for potential danger. White for dead. There’s less and less white these days. Only two white pins today. He returns the map and gets a thankful nod in return, before he slips away now that Vega is busy with cataloging his finds and making a report. It’s not that he doesn’t what he had said or tries to do help Kaidan but sometimes it’s just too much. And he needs this drink as soon as possible. He hitches a ride with a transport heading towards main camp but jumps out just a bit before reaching it. Then he walks.

He has light for a bit over an hour and if he’s left in the dark… Well, thankfully it’s not too cold here nor is he vulnerable without light. The walk clears his mind a bit and lifts his spirits up as he walks over the ground up rubble that makes up the temporary roads. The sun to his path he can see clearly when the monument comes into view. Using monument is a bit of a stretch as it’s no more than huge hunk of molten metals that has a blue shine to it, even in the reddish light of the setting sun. When he comes closer the mementos  people have left here come into view The wilted as well as the fresh flowers, small tokens, small stuffed animals here and there bring  softness to the landscape. Brings love in this place that shattered everything for Kaidan.

“Hey, Shepard. Mind if I join you?” his voice a soft murmur as he sits down near the the wreck, resting against a rock, a bouquet of almost fresh daffodils near his left elbow. He doesn’t wait for answer as he pulls the bottle of whiskey out and pours it in two cups. The whiskey looks dark in the cup, no glasses for them here, nor ice. He toasts the empty cup and takes a sip. It tastes horrible and induces a coughing fit. When he survives that he takes another sip and blinks away the tears. He sits in a silence, taking sips every now and then, making a report of everything that has happened after the last time he was here.

“This is horrible. Almost as bad that slop you made me drink when we were in… Where were we?” he coughs a little, taking one more sip, waiting for an answer. He doesn’t get one. He never does. The whiskey burns his throat and leaves a nasty aftertaste but he’s committed to this. His dad would be disappointed if he didn’t drink it all after pouring it. A soft blow of wind comes and ruffles his hair and he takes what he can get.

“Hey, no funny business in public, you know that,” he admonishes gently, running his own hand through his hair. If for a second he imagines a hand that touches his, well, he’s going to blame the burning whiskey. He knocks back the drink and leans back, head resting on stone and closes his eyes. He drank too fast, he’s going to get dizzy in a moment and probably nauseous later.

“You remember what you said after the party? When you were almost too hungover to function properly?” Kaidan waits but nothing happens, not even a wind to disturb his thoughts. “You said that that was the last time I’d have to watch after your hungover ass and I’d get to be the one doing stupid decisions and getting massively drunk because you were through being the irresponsible one. So why…?” His voice breaks and he swallows, his throat feels sore and the constricted feeling in his chest tightens. It takes a few moments to compose himself. When he opens his eyes the sun is almost completely down and Kaidan can see the pale moon already over the horizon. “Why aren’t you here then?” the question is more of a whisper than a voiced thought. He can hear footsteps behind and he rises to his feet, swaying, the alcohol playing its part. His back is straight and the tears are wiped when Vega stops at his side.

“Hey, major. Ready to head back in? Or want to share your spoils?” he asks and Kaidan snorts.

“No one should be drinking that… sewer water. We can go back now. Thanks for coming to fetch me,” he slaps one shoulder and James grins, draping his massive arm over his shoulders and giving him a brief hug.

“No problem. I’ll just pay my respects to Loco and then we’ll hit the canteen. I have insider info that there’s fresh stuff from today’s expedition.” His wink is ridiculous as he releases Kaidan and turns around. Kaidan watches as he gives a textbook perfect salute to the memorial. They are both quiet, James holding the salute, Kaidan setting the bottle and the half-full cup of whiskey as near the thing as possible. When he straightens up James is there, slipping his hand around his elbow, steadying him. Kaidan nods in thanks and together they walk away. Halfway through walking back James gets a huge grin on his face.

“I bet Loco would have loved it.”

“Are you kidding? John would have drank the whole thing and then went searching for something more. The man drank ryncol on a dare, the stupid bastard,” Kaidan complains and James laughs. And for a moment, with James’ laughter in his ears and his warm hand on his arm, with the whiskey warming him up and making everything softer around the edges, Kaidan smiles.
