hammerhead flatworms (Bipaliinae) are in my estimation among the most beautiful terrestrial animals, often sporting bright colors and striking patterns that advertise their toxicity.
bipaliines feed on either worms or land gastropods, tracking the slime trails of prey with their highly sensitive spade- or crescent-shaped head plate.
Southeast Asia is a hotspot for bipaliine diversity, and at least six species can be found in Singapore, all of which I managed to encounter this summer!
It’s interesting that nearly everyone, including myself, when they first encounter Greyroot in Silksong, connect her to the White Lady in Hollow Knight. Because when she reveals her true nature as a parasite, I realized what she was probably meant to be.
She’s a hammerhead flatworm; granted, hammerhead flatworms are predators rather than parasitic worms and reproduce by fragmentation or eggs, but the two tendrils seem pretty indicative that’s what she was designed after, regardless of the biological accuracy. The thing is, this doesn’t actually make me less fond of the idea that she’s somehow related to the White Lady, but rather, does that make the White Lady some kind of parasitic worm creature as well? It would be quite interesting if so!

Bipalium
Introduction Bipalium is a genus of large, terrestrial predatory flatworms often called hammerhead worms or broadhead planarians due to their distinctive, expanded head shape. These land planarians are widely recognized for their predatory habits and invasive potential, making them remarkable subjects in ecological and biological studies. Bipalium species are notorious for preying mainly on…
image description. an MSpaint drawing of a hammerhead flatworm, Diversibipalium engeli, curled up in a shape that vaguely resembles a heart. the flatworm has a red half moon shaped head with a rounded black rectangle in the center, and a black body with six or seven squiggly white stripes. above the flatworm is a quote from Tumblr user crevicedwelling that reads: "I tell them that they're beautiful and that they're a problem I can't solve by destroying them". end ID.
