It has been estimated that between between 356 million and 1 billion birds are killed each by collisions. This male Ruby-throated Hummingbird collided with the (clear) backboard of a backyard basketball hoop. There are many things individuals, organizations, and municipalities can do to prevent collisions. The American Bird Conservancy’s (@americanbirdconservancy ) webpage has many resources for those who want to learn more. Male Ruby-throated Hummingbird’s throat feathers change color from black to red depending how the light is hitting them. #BirdCollision #PreventBirdCollisions #RubythroatedHummingbird #Perspective #MacroPhotography #Feather (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR4qz_LLHhp/?utm_medium=tumblr

Challenge: Put up Bird Decals
Experts believe that over 100 million birds die each year in collisions with buildings and skyscrapers in the United States and Canada alone. Birds cannot see glass and don't understand the architectural cues, such as window frames, mullions, and handles, that help people detect it. When a bird collides with a window it is enough to kill them, severely injure, or leave stunned on the ground - vulnerable to predators. Because window collisions are equally dangerous all birds, they can have a serious impact on bird populations.
There are a few easy ways you can help prevent birds colliding with window. Try playing a sun ornament or crystal in your windows. Or visit For the Birds Nature Shop to purchase anti-collison window decals or window marker tape from Feather Friendly. Learn more about the science of bird collisions here. And bookmark this article for tips on what to do if a bird does fly into your window.
