The Red-Shouldered Hawk (rivaled only by the Osprey) is perhaps one of the most common birds of prey spotted in Florida. Local hawk populations in the North-Eastern part of the United States have reportedly declined in recent years; however, more research is needed for a conclusive decision. The top issue facing Red-Shouldered Hawk populations is urbanization; the result of an ever-expanding need for resources paralleled by an exponentially expanding population

While the Red-Shouldered Hawk is not the species most vulnerable to urban expansion, it is a key indicator in the route that many once abundant species may take as climate change continues to affect animal populations worldwide. At some point, it is not a question of “if” an essential bird species will go extinct, but “when” one will. Our beautiful bird of the year champions! Hoiho are such beautiful unique penguins, and they’re in trouble. There are around 225 breeding pairs on the mainland, and setnet and bottom trawl fisheries, climate change and human disturbance are serious threats to their continued existence. These birds could go extinct on the mainland in the next 20-40 years. #birdventurenz #birdoftheyear #boty2019 #seabird #conservationphotography #conservationphotographer #endangered #extinctionisforever #wanderwonder #subantarctic #subantarcticnz #birdsofinstagram #birds_adored #bird_brilliance #seabirdstory #nzbirds #portrait_perfection @docgovtnz @forestandbird @yelloweyedpenguintrust @nz_birds #nikon #nikond500 https://www.instagram.com/p/B5L8PN6Jpwa/?igshid=7vuybb3b2y28

Kakī / black stilt made it to #3 in the 2018 #BirdoftheYear competition, a huge boost in publicity for one of the world’s rarest wading birds. We have a huge number of endangered species in Aotearoa, not just the high profile ones like kākāpō and takahē - and they all deserve attention and support so that we can help conserve them. #nzbirds #birdventurenz #aotearoa #your_best_birds #endangeredspwcies #extinctionisforever #teamkakī #birdstagram #birds_brilliance #birds_adored #thebrillianceofbirds #wildnz @nz_birds @forestandbird @nikonnz #newzealand #travelnz #conservation #conservationphotographer #conservationphotography #threatenedspecies #feathered_friends #wilderness #adventure #birds_of_instagram #river #wanderwonder #earlybird #nuts_about_birds #bird_lovers_daily https://www.instagram.com/p/B4krxiCpniz/?igshid=ijbxi0n6supy
It’s #birdoftheyear time again, and I always have trouble choosing my favourite! I have a seabird soul, but Aotearoa is home to so many different birds, each wonderful in their own way! During the bird venture I fell in love with them all...
