Emus may not be able to fly, but for such a big bird they sure can run. Standing at 5.2 - 6.2 feet high, these flightless birds have small wings relative to their body size. Their long, powerful legs, though, allow them to run up to about 30 miles (50 kilometers) per hour. Found across Africa’s hot savannahs and open woodland, the ostrich is the world’s largest bird. It stands up to a 2.7m tall and weighs as much as 159kg. Although the ostrich is flightless, it is adept at running. Using its long legs, powerful thighs and strong feet, the ostrich can cover five metres in a single stride and reach speeds of over 70km per hour. Ostriches are mainly vegetarian, eating roots, leaves, flowers and seeds. Did you know? Peacock feather can grow up to 1.7 meters long and will make up to 60% of their body weight. The brilliance and health of their feathers represent the health of their immune system, and a healthy male is attractive to the peahen. Peacocks shed their feathers naturally in a process called molting. Molting takes place every year after the mating season, between February and August. The blue peacock - the national bird of India - is a colourful, swan-sized bird, with a fan-shaped crest of feathers, a white patch under the eye and a long, slender neck. The blue peacock (male) has a glistening blue breast and neck with a spectacular bronze-green tail of around 200 elongated feathers. They also feature ornamental ocellus (eyespot) on the tips of their feathers. The emus (Dromaius Novaehollandie) is endemic to Australia, where it is the largest native bird. It is the second-tallest living bird, shorter only than the Ostrich. Emus have grey-brown plumage of shaggy appearance; the shafts and the tips of the feathers are black. The plumage varies in colour due to environmental factors, giving the bird a natural camouflage. They can grow up to 6 feet tall (1.8 meters) measure 5 feet (1.5 meters) from bill to tail, and weigh up to 120 pounds (54 kilograms). With a life expectancy of about 10-20 years in the wild, and 35 years in captivity, emus forage for a variety of plants and insects, but have been known to go for weeks without eating.
