Okay, so I watched Hamilton for the first time last week. I knew a bit about it, because it absolutely took over pop culture for a solid year, but it surprised me in ways I didn’t really expect.
First of all, I thought Hamilton was bi in this play. Looking back, I don’t know where I got that idea, but I thought it was represented in the play, or at least widely accepted fanon. It was not represented in the play (unless I missed some throwaway line or something). I knew Hamilton cheated on his wife, but I thought it was with a man. And that both ‘The Room Where It Happens’ and the lyric ‘if I can prove that I never broke the law, will you promise not to tell a single soul what you saw’ both referenced that.
At the same time, I thought somehow that Hamilton had cheated on his wife with his sister-in-law. I wasn’t wrong about how they were fond of each other, but it never went so far as actual adultery. Also, I thought he was married to Angelica Schuyler. And I was completely unaware of Eliza.
