[ michiel huisman, cis male, he/his ] VINCENT HENDRIKS is a HUMAN who happens to be paired up with ARIELLE KEBBEL. They are described as EMPATHETIC & METHODICAL but also COMPLACENT & INDULGENT, so I guess we’ll have a real handful here in Versailles. They’re an ALLY to the vampires, so I wonder how that will play out. Anyways, let’s hope the 40 year old CHEMICAL ENGINEER doesn’t get bored with their partner too fast.

biography.
if confronted with questions regarding his own existence, dr. hendriks will always and most certainly confirm that he’s had a relatively boring life. born in the netherlands to a surgeon for a father and a chemical engineer for a mother, vincent had a few expectations resting on his shoulders, though he was never one to back down or shy away from a challenge. in fact, he excelled in the mathematical and science fields, even so much as skipping ahead in his schooling and rocketing himself into his field of choice with a head-start. his parents were proud of their son for his achievements, fully supportive of his choice to follow along in his mother’s footsteps.
his schooling was unremarkable to speak of, but incredibly noteworthy in personal accomplishments. a bit of an over-achiever, vincent set himself to tasks (and often applied himself to challenges he knew would force him to think more critically in a situation) and wouldn’t release his hold on them until they were complete. he accepted an internship at pharmaceutical corporation in the netherlands upon graduation and continued into studying for his doctorates all the while ---seeing the lofty goal of the life he wanted on the highest shelf possible and tasking himself with achieving it. anything less would be unacceptable.
he met his wife, natalie, through university at the age of 22, marrying her three years after their relationship began. it was always hard work to maintain, but vincent was a doting husband where he could be and his wife was an understanding woman - she had her own goals in mind and the two thrived off of pushing one-another to meet them. he was never bored with her, it was impossible with how attentive he was, how intrigued by their dynamic and completely whisked away by her wit and general disposition he was. shortly after their wedding they conceived a child and vincent’s son, gabriel, was born nine months thereafter. everything was perfect.
it’s always the simplest of things that upend a balanced life. a slick road and a drunk driver, in vincent’s case, stole away his happiness in one easy snap. he was lucky to survive the accident himself, albeit with several surgeries to stabilize his own condition, but left with the remains of what was: two funerals to plan and the private mourning of a life that barely had time to bud. the loss of his wife, the loss of his son, and the accompanying guilt that plagued him established something of an unhealthy mindset and after settling the affairs vincent sank himself into his work wholly ---all-together abandoning the skeleton of the life he had begun and shifting into something much more surgical, sterile, and free of emotional investment.
he doesn’t recall how he stumbled upon the existence of vampires, only that it made sense in the scheme of things. he doesn’t remember where the shift of his engineering moved from human pharma to an attempt to research and treat, to potentially cure the disease plaguing both humans and their vampire kin. in the ten years since the loss of his family, dr. vincent hendriks has discovered and inserted himself into the affairs of things well-above him ---becoming a notable name for research and forward progress in the assistance of versailles’ attempts to safekeep both species.
while vincent has been a citizen of versailles for some years, it’s only within the past few months he’s allowed himself to be the human half of a coupling, with the strict notation that he would delve into research further considering the pairing. his interests lay, first and foremost, with his work and he strives tirelessly to engineer something to either slow or entirely counter the destructive disease that plagues both species.
personality.
incredibly task-oriented and driven, vincent is the kind of man who will not put something down until he’s made significant progress on it. while that’s always been a chief marker of his personality, it’s only gotten more significant since the passing of his wife and son. vincent is defined by his work, wholly absorbed in it sometimes to an unhealthy degree, and defined by it. he is his successes, and even before stepping into the unknown world concerning creatures of the night he had marked research in his chemical engineering.
though he can easily be seen as bookish, vincent is not the typical trope of science geek ---he’s proud and a touch narcissistic considering his achievements, less likely to delve into a speech about something research-based and certainly snarky in the right circumstances. shunned from emotional attachments considering his past tragedies, he’s more likely to throw himself into the next step of his work than seek out a conversational partner, though he can be quite the social animal when the time calls for it.
he’s still plagued by survivor’s guilt, though it manifests itself in the unhealthy means of work - shirking sleep for late nights gathering data or spent in a lab somewhere. on colder days one can catch a grimace on his face, marked by a scarred body from the various surgeries he underwent after the car accident and the negative impact it had on his physical form in the years thereafter.
as a whole, vincent is witty and charismatic, though less interested int he individual than he is by the big picture. an over-achiever, he’s terribly lonely at the very base of himself but refuses to allow any form of deeper connection lest the weight of loss cloud his better judgment. his overarching goal is to assist in the safe-keeping of humanity as well as the vampiric race, and while he is less vocal about his standpoints (wishing not to paint a target on his back unnecessarily large) he will be the first to stand up and defend his research, and his right to the possible synthesis of a treatment - at the very least.
