Camps and bivouacs
“The numerous and rapid movements of the army force it to sometimes improvise as to the lodgings. The soldier often has to build a shelter to spend the night, and this after a march which can be gruelling; we must add to this the weather conditions which are not always favorable (winter 1806-1807, campaign of Russia, campaign of Saxony, campaign of France); sometimes a housing ticket gives a place in a farm or a house and allows a more restorative rest; finally, for long stays, camps are set up as in Berlin in 1806, on Lobau Island in 1809, in Dresden in 1813. [..] In ordinary bivouacs, men eat and fall asleep around the fire with their coat or greatcoats as a blanket and, as a pillow, the backpack or the coat rack for cavalrymen (which is also a precaution against theft). This method, pleasant on sunny days, quickly becomes hell in rain or snow and waking up is particularly difficult: numb limbs, sore lower back, stiffness, wet mustaches, damp, wet and heavy clothes. [..] As soon as you are in the bivouac, you have to think about preparing the soup, an essential element for the soldier; it is also necessary to inspect the equipment, re-sew the boot liners, check the cartridge pouches and fill them with cartridges, change the stone of the rifle, carefully wrap the battery with a cloth or waxed cloth to protect it from humidity. At the bivouac, the soldier who is near the fire "roasts" on one side and "freezes" on the other; you have to constantly turn around. The officers have cloth bags which they slip on to protect themselves from the cold and thus take care of their outfit. Coignet notes in his Cahiers that in 1807 the Guard made bags like this, six feet (two meters) high to slip into them at night. If the day has not been too trying, and if the weather allows it, the soldiers keep watch: they like to listen to a "storyteller", to drink mulled wine with cinnamon, to listen to the reading of newspapers and gazettes. When everyone is in bed, the cooks must take care to keep the fire under the bowls to be able to benefit from a hot soup when waking up and, exceptionally, a cup of coffee. If the ground is wet, the soldiers cut tree branches (if possible softwood) and make a sort of insulation blanket, especially if the ground is covered with snow. The chief surgeon of the Grand Army Percy says that he "often slept on straw, a pillow under his head, his schabraque on his feet, and his leather apron, which was used to perform amputations, on the blanket. " [...] [...] In 1807 the Imperial Guard sets up its camp in front of the castle of Finkenstein; it is a veritable military town built with considerable proportions. After Wagram, the infantry of the Imperial Guard set up their three camps around Vienna. All the barracks are made of planks and can hold ten to twelve men; the large camp has more than four hundred. These barracks look like pretty little houses with the top painted red and the front in white. In the middle of the camp stands a white brick pyramid erected in memory of Marshal Lannes. Despite all this type of comfort, the preference of the soldier goes towards a stay in private homes, which gives him a real roof, a bed or straw, a real shelter and a meal. Brandt indicates that: "On arriving at the stopover, the quartermasters would first seek the local commander or the commissioner of war's visa, then the accommodation tickets at the town hall. There they also delivered the food, fodder and carriages notes, which they then passed back to the suppliers. " The German Gross also testifies: "Besides, the French were good natured, a little rowdy, a little proud about their recent victories, but sociable and easy-going. Their hosts would have found them charming, had it not been for the annoying obligation to provide to their keep, which again they only dared to complain about (sic) discreetly (..) Generally, they were satisfied with the table of their hosts. " In 1808, the artilleryman Séruzier was in Prussia and placed at the disposal of the peasants with whom the troops housed the horses of the artillery train for the work in the fields! Work done in part by the soldiers themselves.”
